Here is the thing about many big cities in Europe: they are a tourist spot for nearly every country, not just America. They speak English to you because that is the most common second language in Europe and by virtue of being in a touristy location, you are highly likely not from that country and don’t speak the language. It’s so American to assume they know you are American. They don’t always know that (unless you are fat and/or wearing American flags). They only know that you are likely not French. Think: real New Yorkers would never be found in Times Square. People in Chicago avoid the Bean at all costs. Same with major tourist spots in Europe. The locals live outside the touristy part of town.

Fashionable sneakers are very popular in Europe. You will see a lot of people wearing Veja and they’re quite comfortable! Personally I usually wear a basic white fashion sneaker, so if you are looking for ones that won’t break the bank, something like the Adidas Stan Smith or Adidas Sleek would be a good option that isn’t so expensive yet is comfortable. Beyond that - bring layers as the weather can fluctuate and basic/neutrals are IMO always an easy travel go to - like Uniqlo. As others said, do bring a pair of boots or loafers or a nicer shoe to go to dinner and such, especially if you’re going somewhere nicer. Paris is super into street style so the old “stuffy Paris” attitude is a bit dated. Check out Le Marais for fun and trendy shops, restaurants, and good people watching

🤔😒🤯 sincerely, all Europeans

I have two very close friends from France. They and their family actually love Americans and love sharing French culture with us and learning more about American culture.

Yes, only allowed to wear cowboy boots and cowboy hat as an American. 🤠

Why would you not pack sneakers?

likehelpful

I have to wear sneakers due to my terrible arches and hip pain. Going to Europe this winter and I’m going to be rockin air forces and new balances

like

Bring a scarf. Everyone wears a scarf in paris and will keep you warm while you’re walking the city.

Yes, especially Hermes and Chanel as you walk down Avenue GEORGE V 😍

Sorry but there is tone of ways not to carry stereotypes before even asking that type of questions ( Google, social media etc…) .

No beret.

Unless your beret is green, tan, or maroon.. leave it. /s

Haha

Function > Fashion if you are going to be walking all day. Who cares if you look touristy? You ARE a tourist. It's a huge city and there are tonnes of people who dress worse than tourists. Just pack an extra set of nicer clothes and footwear for fancier events/venues. The idea that you want to inconvenience yourself to potentially impress complete strangers you can't even communicate with or will never meet again seems so weird.

like

Seriously why WHY would you want to pain your feet just so total strangers who might glance at your footwear might happen to surmise that you, like most people on any given day of the year, are visiting one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world? It’s just not worth it. No flat is as comfortable as a proper walking shoe. None.

like

Lol def pack sneakers. What’s the rumor?

like

The number of Europeans wearing Adidas is pretty high

You know france is a muticultural country, everyone is free to wear anything they like! It’s not a prison with uniforms! Seriously nobody cares if you wear sneakers, beret or anything else! Every person has their own unique styles, and the more you look like others, the less attractive you will be!(in case you are trying to look attractive)!

like

For outside yes, but for going inside venues there is a dress code. Some restaurants can be very upscale, some very casual, just like anywhere.

I can spot Americans from far away, so just wear what your comfortable in and remember that smart-casual is our casual (t-shirt and shorts is for athletics). Sneakers are fine, most people here wear more fashion sneakers than athletic sneakers (there's a difference). Be polite, learn some basic French, and always ask someone if they speak English (in French) before speaking English straight to them. But definitely don't wear a beret.

like

Exactly!!! They aren’t wearing the chunky rebooks with high socks up to their knees paired with a Fanny pack or tourist backpack.

I studied abroad there. Just don’t wear athletic sneakers. Somewhat fashionable walking sneakers are fine and practical. I would also pack flat boots. Echoing above on the scarf. It’s basically a prerequisite for living in the city. Otherwise just make sure you have nice layers and good walking shoes. Expect to walk everywhere.

like

I wore casual Allen Edmonds shoes, khakis, a collared shirt, and a sport jacket every day when I visited a few years ago. Never felt out of place. It was also cold, so part of that was layering, but Parisians in general are better dressed than any Americans outside of New Yorkers. Also when you enter shops, make sure to greet the employees/shopkeepers with “bonjour” or whatever greeting is appropriate for the time of day. Like New Yorkers, Parisians get a bad rap for being rude, but they’re perfectly nice if you’re courteous and follow the general rules of the place.

like

Depends how young you are, but sneakers are worn widely by younger French people

like

I got very cute and comfortable boots. They were good for walking all day while still fashionable.

like

I used to live there all about the sneakers or hiking boots if cold.

like

Parisians and Europeans in general dress nice and elegant! There are many flat shoes and boots that you can walk in all day and look nice.

like

Thanks!

I would wear a nice pair of flats or block heels if you plan on doing a lot walking. Have a great trip!

How do I get them to understand that 1) representation is important, 2) white men from varying white dominant country =\= diverse, 3) their white struggle easy vs. minority , 4) diversity hiring will not make talent pool worse?

Okay for the last time - the fact that Cities tend to have higher crime (which has been declining over the years ) is a function of what cities are and what they attract - big populations (people moving here for opportunities), social/economic variations resulting in higher possibilities of crime. Cities also tend to have a more diverse demographic than smaller towns, suburbs which tend to have less economic and social diversity. If you have to use crime as a metric for comparison....(contd.)

Had to work 2 projects that required me to work day, night, and multiple weekends because SM relied mostly on me and the rest of my team weren't capable of delivering quality work hence more weight shifted to my plate. Few sleepless nights have been hard and I always hope it doesn't hurt my baby. Thank God, my second trimester is easier as nausea's gone by then. Countdown to 5 more weeks when this project finally where I'll be 30 wks prego, it just reminds me how strong we all are. I'm also asking the same SM to approve my maternity leave in 2 weeks and he doesn't know I'm pregnant yet (I don't show much and don't disclose unless asked explicitly because I feel shame due to being a 2nd year analyst). He always thanks me in front of partners for my exemplary work, and I will just be so proud when he finds out I managed to do all that while pregnant 💜
