Is it true that all journalists must suffer from being underpaid and exploited for the first years of the profession? I thought it would be just a matter of third world countries, but I'm living this in the US at the moment.

My friend and I like to sit confused wondering how the older people we work with were able to afford to start a family on the salary they started with. We get to struggle

It's hard to not be resentful that, for the same work, they got to build a life and I get to buy my groceries with pocket change.

I feel like anyone who is entering the industry, especially in entertainment are going to be paid very little in the beginning. You’ll be lucky if it’s just your first year. I’ve known people who have work as temps for years…

It is a matter of luck not to be exploited with a low salary. I think I am not wrong when I say that the same thing happens in all parts of the world.

I was lucky that in my first job I was not exploited with a low salary, but later I changed jobs and had a good salary, but I was being exploited with long working hours.

We need more articles that talk about the exploitation of journalists in their beginnings but they don't let us write about them hahaha... It is something very common to see us with low salaries and excessive workloads in our beginnings, personally, after 5 years the workload has only increased.

I don't think it's about the companies, but rather the conditions and opportunities available. First, the demand for quality journalism is high, but the number of jobs available is relatively low. This means that competition for positions is fierce, and employers may be able to get away with offering lower wages and fewer benefits. Additionally, the industry as a whole has been struggling in recent years, as advertising revenue has declined and digital platforms have taken over from traditional print media. This has resulted in job losses and salary cuts across the board.

There are also many opportunities for journalists who are willing to work hard and develop their skills. There are many talented and dedicated journalists who have succeeded in spite of the difficult conditions in the industry. So it is definitely possible to make a career in journalism, but it may take some time to achieve success.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the experience of journalists may vary depending on their location and the media market in which they work. However, it is generally true that journalists may start out their careers earning relatively low salaries, and may be subjected to various forms of exploitation. This can be especially true in smaller markets or for journalists who are starting out in their careers.

Some journalists may start out working for free or very low wages, while others may have more lucrative opportunities right away. It really depends on the individual and their circumstances. I have worked as a journalist for 5 years and I've never felt underpaid.

No, it is not true that all journalists must suffer from being underpaid and exploited for the first years of the profession. In fact, there are many different ways to enter into the journalism profession, and each person's experience will be unique.

First year? I'm 6 years in and still can barely afford my studio apartment.

That is not true… journalist don’t suffer from being underpaid and exploited during the first years of their careers; they suffer from being underpaid and exploited from the start of their career until the day they retire.

I want to take more brainstorming, decision making responsibilities but I don’t see that in the career path for PM. Career path usually goes like this- Sr PM, Director l, Sr Director, and so on. But all do same work.

Journalism is the best job in the world but I feel like people are less likely to take my work seriously because I am female. So it's like they automatically think the only things I would be good at writing about are fluffy little human interest stories. I'm just a reporter like everyone else. Is there some way I can tell my supervisor that yes, I do like those stories, but I like being a serious reporter even more?

But of course, it's all fake and payed 😂 turns out she wanted me to go there (even though I don't work for that TV network) so she's sure she'll be paid at the end of the show. Wth did I just do.
