Is it true that exercise helps you have more energy? I eat decent, but I’m about 20lbs overweight. I bought a spin bike but got shin splints from it 4ish months ago, so I just do low impact classes 1-3 days a week. Any advice on changes I could make to get better energy? I try to stay away from caffeine

Shin splints from cycling? That’s highly unusual. Cycling is a low impact workout. Shin splints are caused by frequent impact on hard surfaces such as running, dancing, or jumping. Cycling doesn’t cause stress on your shinbones. I’d talk to a trainer because this feels incorrect and cycling should be a perfect low impact exercise for your needs. Incline walking and running are not. I say this as a former track runner who had shin splints.

Nice question!
I’m glad you are trying to move more. I also got some 30 pounds in this last year I’ve been an athlete, also very in to fitness but depression got me hard so lexapro and low days got me in the worse shape of my life.

I am on the way and way better now moving everyday.
Good things I did:
- sign up for Class pass so I get access to different classes around me.
- Go to work out 3x a week + 30 min low impact of cardio (walk faster, elíptical)
Walk walk walk more get your 10k steps a day
Bike everywhere - it is good

For energy: cold shower and pre workout

I work out everyday and notice that you need to up the calories, otherwise you won’t have enough energy to last the workday. I end up
napping sometimes or having caffeine to boost. Protein shake, better nutrition, sleep, water, brisk walks.

Back to the question at hand from OP. I'm no scientist but yes, regular exercise can lead to more energy throughout the day. 1. Increased heart rate leads to increased blood flow leads to increased thyroid hormone circulation leads to increased metabolism. The metabolic process is the consumption of fuel for energy so if metabolism goes up, energy goes up.

As others said though, you also need to up your calorie intake for that to occur otherwise you'll just have a short term energy burst but once the calories are burned by your body, the energy runs out.

I find I get more energy with more vigorous activity (get heart rate to moderate-high % of maximum).

Maybe get your blood work done. You could be lacking vitamins!

Yes! I feel it does.. on my rest days I definitely feel more “sluggish”
