I think that’s most jobs in general
it sure feels like it
I haven't personally seen this.
What I have seen more of is just poor management that can have similar impacts to the employees.
I think in often cases an employee might come to realize or know that they are not performing and the firm is doing things to document their underperformance. Once an employee understands this, they usually might quit before the firm could fire them. A firm would rather them quit so they can avoid lawsuits
Leave, my coach gaslighted me and pushed me out
Yes. They “counsel you out” meaning crap work, low raises, no bonuses. Nobody actually ever says anything.
Counsel you out typically means have discussions about performance and whether you’re really happy there and what you’re looking for in life… and encouraging them to leave.
Not treating them like garbage.
With that said… if someone isn’t performing they shouldn’t be getting good raises and bonuses.
Wow that was totally my experience as well but didn’t realize it’s a “thing”. I’ve never been treated so badly at any other jobs in my career until I worked in an accounting firm.
It’s true although generally I haven’t seen the reasons in your parentheses. Usually it’s less assigned work on projects, email or other documented performance appraisals, regular cadence with HR, etc. Good firms/leaders usually try to help provide guidance on positions in industry but YMMV
Yes this happened to me. They wanted me to quit and put me on the worst engagements. I found another job and quit.
Uh. No. Not if they are genuinely descent humans.
It’s not been my experience that good leaders at reputable accounting firms push people out through such sinister means, but that being said - performance documentation, poor comp, people not wanting to work with you, lack of staffing, and getting put on some of the least desirable engagements are a by product. Of course companies hope you leave of your own volition as it’s best for all parties to do so when the writing is on the wall, but they won’t hesitate to counsel you out either!
