Many firms value the true litigation experience that comes from insurance defense. I personally came from an insurance defense firm as an associate to my current firm.

We like hiring insurance defense folks for our construction litigation practice. You just can't replicate that level of experience. By the time you are 5 years out, you've probably handled more litigations than some of the partners here.
This is 100%. Our construction and products teams hire insurance defense folks all the time. That’s better lit experience than we give our home grown associates, simply because of the volume of reps you can get. Same is moderately true with L&E. [I did insurance defense for a year before lateraling to do coverage and business lit, but so far I’m the only one on those teams that took that path.]

True gritty cheap insurance defense firms often try a lot of cases and that can be sought after experience in other litigation fields
Its not difficult to transition from one litigation practice to another. I've coached 100's of attorneys in those sorts of transitions. You can do it.
I didn’t come from insurance Def, but did have a lit back ground. I wouldn’t say it’s exceedingly difficult to get in house, but it’s hard and can take a while. Companies need more transactional attorneys than litigation/counseling oriented, so there are fewer positions. At each company I’ve been at, txn attys outnumbered lit attys 3 to 1 or more.
It’ll also really depend on what you want to do in house. How do your skills transfer? Ins Def won’t transfer to commercial contract drafting. But depending on your area, a company large enough to have a lot of litigation could find your skills useful. (E.g., Retailer defending personal injury, commercial real estate and landlord/tenant). It’s finding the fit that works.
Thank you. That’s helpful to know. I primarily work on med mal defense/health care law but have knowledge of other health care risk management-type and reporting issues. It seems my only chance of going in-house would be a major health system or other similar entity.
I previously worked in health care at a major insurance company. They only hired into the legal department from people who had 5 or more yrs experience in practice. I think your experience will help you transition. There is also a lot of opportunities for JD's on the healthcare compliance side.
