Is it true that some National firms are waiving the CPA requirement for manager level if an employee has their EA? Heard thru the grapevine EY was allowing this.

Great for EAs not so great for CPAs. I’m still happy for the profession since it allows more people to move up and have the desire stay within the profession. Unfortunately for CPAs they may see their credential not as valuable. Our value to the firm/company should be based on what we can produce and do as opposed to what credential we have. I also have a CPA so I’m not trying to be biased.

CBIZ has been doing this forever. You can make it to Director with an EA. Only need CPA for MD.

Pwc allows this on some teams.

Verified.

As far as I can remember EY has always allowed a manager promotion in tax for CPA, EA, or attorney, since all three of those are sufficient for tax purposes.

like

GT still insists on CPA. A SALT leader on the west coast fought to get approval for some of the people in her group to get promoted to manager with an EA, but the firm didn't extend this to all employees in tax.

Moved up to Senior Manager at RSM with EA, required approval but was easy. With EA, you can become a Principal but not a Partner in RSM.

like

Yeah but that is standard as well. You’ve always had to be a CPA to be a Partner and everything else is a Principal.

Maybe changing policies to allow people to promote to manager with an EA, even if their CPA eligible, would be a way to get more people to go into/stay in PA. If firms want to, they can limit who's partner eligible to just CPAs. But if the main goal is getting more people in the profession, maybe this is one step towards that (obviously doesn't help audit, but that's their problem).

KPMG, at least in tax, hires senior managers without CPA’s. You can also be a director with an EA.

All the global firms (the G7) allow EAs instead of CPAs or Attorneys in most practice groups.

Don’t public accounting firms need to be owned at least 51% by CPAs? Also at my firm we give out rare exceptions for a CPA/JD (usually very high performing or very tenured/experienced people who the firm cannot lose) also most of our non CPAs are CMIs for SUT

At pwc it depends on the group. Mostly tax will allow it except not some of the national practices

For the 100th time, yes.

EA only for certain practices - income tax practice must have CPA or no promotion anymore. The rule changed years ago.

The new EDGE group at EY allows promotion to manager without a CPA. I’m not sure if the EA is required or not but I would think that it would be.

It’s very new so we’re all learning about it and developing it. The Edge teams that I know of are do all of the normal work that the general tax practice does but my understanding is that they’re primarily remote, have a more normal 40 hour schedule, and some are client facing and others aren’t. Im not sure if the other service lines have something similar or if this is specific to FSO Tax. The goal is to retain people who want to leave EY for industry in search of a reduced work schedule so Edge is supposed to be a more industry like role but with the perks of Big4. This is all my understanding of the program. I’m not in it currently but I am curious to see how it progresses to potentially transfer into it in the future.

Several of my managers are EAs.

KPMG now allows this too. after much back and forth. Tax NYC, at least, but I think all of tax.

Currently focused on "Visual Analytics", but what is the best way to keep career trajectory moving upwards? Currently making $120k. Currently working at Deloitte S&O in GPS, how would I go about trying to transfer to M&A? Is this difficult?

Thinking about leaving corp transactional work for a personal injury firm, with the goal of starting my own PI firm after that. Anyone have any experience or advice?
Context: Started at V5 firm, M&A. Went in house with mid-market PE group. Money is pretty good, but very dissatisfied. Basically process forwarded emails all day. Little human interaction feel like I'll always be a servant.
Feel like I would be happier in something more entrepreneurial with human interaction, so PI?

Is it fraud or somehow bad to just start and quit a 2nd job every 1-2 months once you actually start to have to do real work? The first few weeks of most jobs tend to be pretty low stress and an easy paycheck or 2. And if you only do this at employers you wouldn't return to, is there a downside?
