I just did this with a school, but asked school A to push back their deadline so I could hear back from school B. School A agreed

I know M1 said not to do it, but personally I think I would if I were in your shoes. I think if you frame it well, and say that you’re super excited about them as your #1 choice but also need to pay a substantial deposit to your second choice school by X date, so wondering if they could do anything to help... etc etc. Personally, I don’t know why they would ding you for asking that, and I think the most likely answer would be a simple “no, sorry”

Not worth the risk. They have their processes; asking them to make an exception in your case is, well, unlikely, and it's conceivable that doing so wouldn't help the adcom's opinion of you. BA1's approach is an easier sell, and something schools seem to be surprisingly flexible on. Why don't you start by asking for an extension?

Sounds like you're in the right headspace, OP. The above was meant to be context- and preference-neutral; I might not do the same, but definitely understand why it makes sense. FWIW, the real question here, that you'll need to address (as you note) is which you would take heads-up. Your life would be a lot easier if you could make that choice, then plan accordingly; that said, I'm certainly not one to judge here.
