What kind of roles pay 200-300k?
Bless you PMs.
Hi Everyone,
I just received an offer to work as an software sales representative (SDR) for IBMs Z systems. I'm coming as a sales engineer in the cloud security space. Can anyone advise me on whether Z systems are something worth going into? Also what do the growth opportunities look like at IBM? Is there opportunity for lateral movement onto other teams? Not too sure how I feel about working on mainframes (Z systems) but they keep pitching hybrid cloud to me. IBM
Hi Fishies! (Is that what we are? I’m going with it)
I just came across a Google Research and Insights role that got me SUPER excited and I was about to apply when I had the idea of seeing if anyone would be willing to give me a referral. I understand (and respect) that most of you Googlers on here feel that a referral is only useful if you know the person but I would be happy to jump on the phone to give you some info about me. It would mean so much! 4 YOE at a major audio steaming service

Microsoft, Adobe, LinkedIn, VMware, box, Salesforce, oracle, and databricks all pay similar to FAANG. Yes the salaries get crazy here but they are pretty damn close at a lot of places.
Salesforce is a great company but does not pay very well. Just made the switch from there and doubled salary. Aside from them I’d agree with Google 1 based on my interviews and experience!
I was in a similar boat. I was previously at a startup making what you are now. Decided to jump ship and I'm currently at a mid-sized non-MAMAA company with a TC over 200. I could probably make closer to 300-350 or so at a bigger company, but I didn't want to deal with DS & Algo interviews.
TL;DR you're very likely leaving something on the table, how much is based on how much bs you're willing to put up with to get there.
PS: a good way to know is to put yourself on Hired and throw out the top end of what you think you're worth, see what kind of interest you get.
There are different types. The ones I prefer the most are more real-world oriented, e.g. a take home exercise where you write a backend/front-end, or a pair programming style session where the interviewer presents a simulated problem, and you walk through your process of troubleshooting/solving the issue.
Edit: The one I did at my most recent company was like working through a take-home problem and then a 1:1 session where I walked the interviewer through my choices and reasoning.
I'm at a <500 person SaaS "startup", and make ~500k TC (260k cash). 10 years in the industry, nearly 5 at this company.
Fantastic answer, very informative, thank you for sharing. Good luck on getting to Principal SWE!
how are the hours though ?
I actually work pretty low hours, I’m sure for a SWE it’d be similar unless I’m working in a sweat shop like Amazon or something
