Is it worth jumping to private for same money but better work life balance? I only just received a raise in August but got a job offer with fewer hours. It’s on a much smaller team (1 person I report to) v my team of about 20 at BDO

If you’re leaving PA, I would look for more money. Raises/promotions will most likely be fewer and further between in industry. Also, if you’re going to be a senior accountant, it’s going to be a lot of the same thing with period close. BUT, those hours are going to be better hands down.

like

Yeah I think I’m just so tired I’m willing to jump for just better work life balance. I only just got a 20% bump with a promo in august so i think I’m at market right now anyways. It’s for a tax position and so far it sounds like late nights end around 7 or 8pm with deadlines

Private likes to say they have a better work-life balance, but I started in private and transferred to public and work much less than I ever did before public accounting.

like

MA1 - I did the same. Less flexibility in industry at least in my role and hours were at least as bad. Raises were not as good and I felt less respected. I jumped back to PA in tax and I am happier. I have gotten a little better at saying no to some projects so The hours are not quite as bad as they were during my last stint in PA, but still brutal at times.

like

Don’t leave PA for anything less than a 20% bump

like

I only just got a bump a few months so it sounds like the position is just at market for my level. I’m just so tired I’m willing to jump to work less.

I left public accounting for the same amount of salary, but now I have more work life balance. The way I see it, it's an hourly pay rise because I work less hours for the same salary. I don't regret leaving public accounting. I'm much happier now! I have a better team environment too. I recommend it. More free time is like getting a hourly rise.

like

You can always go back to public. Try it out. If you don’t like it most PA firms will be happy to have you back. They need people so bad.

like

No reason you can’t check out this role and see if you like it. After a year or two if you’re not so burned out, you can look to return to PA to accelerate your promo/salary growth again. Maybe PA will figure out how to not burn people out during this time ( not holding my breath on this one, but one can dream).

like

More free time = money. Its a no brainer

like

I’m on the same boat as you. Happy as hell w my compensation- could it be more? Yes. Would I work 60 hours. No. At all. Been there done that.

Depends how burned out you are, but typically you want to lock in as best a total comp package shifting to private/industry because raises and career growth will slow a bit. Until you continue jumping jobs again haha

like

That’s a solid point. It’s basically a lateral move for more WLB and I’m pretty burnt out so that’s the only thing that’s calling to me.

like

Depends what is more important to you, your life or your money

like

Have you already negotiated, or was that the first offer? You can always ask for a bit more, even if it’s 10%.

Lemme get tht job if u don’t want lol
