Is it worth moving to the Bay Area to gain exposure to tech companies and start ups? (from the U.K.)

From the East Coast of the US it looks like California is going to self-immolate any day now. I'd stay in UK if I were you.

From California, it doesn't 😀

Don’t move to Bay Area without at least job interviews lined up. It’s really expensive and not that easy to get around.

Assuming you need a visa to work in the states I’d say see if you can network your way into interviewing for a Big tech job. Many have offices in London and Dublin so in some cases you can start there and then transfer - added bonus is they pay for your move!

Why not Dublin?

Why not Dublin?

No need with all of the remote opportunities right now. Take a look at Bay Area housing prices and then see what you think....

Sure, but just keep in mind the cost of living is insane. If you're coming across the pond, you might better exploring more of an up-and-coming tech hub, like Philadelphia. You can look into others, but you get the point. If you do decide to move to the Bay Area, be ready to pay top dollar for everything.

Ps. I would be staying at my firm and coming on a secondment type arrangement for 12-18 months. I would want to gain exposure in the sense of serving clients who are based in the Bay Area.

Ah! Then yes seems like a good chance to make some contacts, then apply to work remotely from somewhere cheaper

Eh, not really there are tons of great tech companies out there

I think it matters more if you *want* to move to the Bay Area as part of the experience. If it's about exposure, I think most events take place online nowadays, there may be available sources or exposure despite being where you are at the moment.

No need actually. You can easily work remotely these days. Moving is laborious.

If the salary is worth why not? I've to say that the U.K. is not a place to live imo.

Why didn't you think of Dublin

UK is a pretty expensive place to live and I think you should think again

What do you mean? I already live in the U.K. ?

It’s been interesting to see the debates on here between those who want to reopen and those who think we need to stay in lockdown. For those who want states to reopen, do you think employees should be forced to return to work if their companies reopen, with the penalty of losing unemployment benefits if they don’t return to work?

Anyone else HATE the word “full stack developer” in a lot of tech/LinkedI blog posts? the ONLy time I personally feel it is applicable is when it is being used to describe a developer in a specified domain— or more appropriately— for a specific company.

Ie: Amazon is ran by Java, SQL, and AWS for the most part right? so a full stack developer at Amazon would be competent in those “tech stacks”. However— when I see the word “full stack developer” used as a job title to describe broad categories
