Is job hopping considered a somewhat newer phenomenon? Would it be weird to change jobs every 3-4 years for my next 20 working years? Having a tough time imagining staying put in one place for 5+ years, but have yet to see any leaders I admire in my space that don’t leave at the 5 year mark

Haha fair!

My first job in the US I jumped at year 3, my second year 5. Currently just over 1 year in at my role and would plan on another 5 easily. Hopping constantly sounds exhausting, unless you aren’t progressing anymore. As long as the promotions keep coming I’ll stay, I hit the ceiling I’m out.

Idk if it's new, but I do know that technology has accelerated the churn, just like it has for dating.

Anyway, job hopping while young is normal, as your responsibilities are mainly tasks. As those responsibilities progress into projects, initiatives, programs and businesses that take years to develop, you'll stay in places longer.

Eventually the next job opportunity won't come until you've proven you can do that high-level task that requires years to accomplish.

3 to 4 years in each job isn’t an issue. Especially if you’ve managed to get promoted once or twice.

For me a red flag resume has a series of moves under 2-3 years with little upward movement in expertise or responsibility.

like

I’d be very surprised to see someone pull that off.

Getting promoted in place shows that you can actually perform and get to the next level - it carries some weight. I’ve seen many people move up a level in a job move because they interview well and then demonstrate the Peter Principle.

I’m in DC. I think the average tenure is 11 months. 3-4 years… how do you progress in a career when you stay that long?

like

Voluntary attrition averages 17% for most consulting companies. So your 11 month joke isn't close.

1 year to learn the job. 2nd year to get good at it. 3rd year to start making plans for next move

likehelpful

3-4 years is fine. 6 months to 2 years not as ideal for every single hop.

like

If you progress in your current job in terms of money or learning, it is not necessary to change job, else keep exploring new opportunities every 2 years to know your worth and decide accordingly. Infact it's not that a big deal to change in every 4 or 5 years ,else you might get stagnant .

Kind of strange to hop that often in consulting as we pretty much are getting a new job every few months.

5 years?! I’m going to job 5 next month in 8 years…

Have any of you told your family how much money you make? My family has never asked but I feel like my partner’s family is always trying to figure it out and it makes me uncomfortable. I am so grateful to have a job but I’d rather not disclose my salary to anyone other than the IRS.
