Lifestyle firms don't exist, but Latham is a much more chill place to work than almost any of its peers

Agree with attorney 1. I have a feeling we worked at the same office. Does it rhyme with Renlo Bark?

What you gain in work life balance you lose in prestige and career options

like

Huh? There are prestigious firms that are lifestyle firms. Boston has several where exit opps are top notch.

If life is work then yes.

No.

I know someone from a Latham office that’s 5-6 hours ahead of me (not sure right now) and we were on the same case. Responsiveness was 24/7 regardless of day and time. So no.

Latham? Lifestyle? Bahawahahaha.

This is the most basic question, so yep, I’m asking you to take it easy on me when you reply. I have been practicing for about 5 years total. I have been in civil practice for 2 years. These 2 years have been the most demoralizing, unfulfilling 2 years of my life. I have been giving myself pep talks to find the “positive” spin on it but firm life isn’t for me. I know networking is key but do you have some thoughts/suggestions on how to make an exit...crying at therapy is becoming too much.

Plaintiffs counsel took my clients deposition today. He mentioned that he would likely be ordering the transcripts and I suggested we split the cost of them (in front of court reporter). He got pretty defensive and said absolutely not, it’s unfair to the court reporter, and that it is frowned upon in the industry to do that. Each party orders (and pays for) their own copy. I’m in my 2nd year of practice, never heard such a thing. I’ve actually split the cost before! Curious for insight on this…

My firm has a collections budget (80% of your billable rate x 1850 hours) and an hourly budget that must be met in order to be eligible for a bonus. The firm cares very little about originations and will reward someone for making their collections over someone who brings in new work. I missed my collection budget due to some odd timing with a client, but originated more than all my peers so no bonus for me. I’ve been at this same mid level firm for 9 years and it’s all I know. Is this normal??

How do you deal with anxiety at work? I get very anxious when things are out of my control, and also when not being able to check emails 24 7. It always turns out things are fine and there was no need to be that anxious. I think I make this job even more stressful than it needs to be. Any advice?

How does hourly contract lawyering work? I’m on a contract through a recruiting firm before the company hires me directly. My pay is hourly but I get time and a half for over time. I’m currently a policy atty for a think tank and did prosecution before that so I’ve never “billed.” I regularly check and respond to emails on my phone in the evening after work. Do I include that on my timesheet??
