Is leaving audit without a job lined up and training myself on some relevant analyst skills to try to land an industry position a terrible idea? I don’t see myself building up SQL, Python, or modeling skills with my work hours and not sure if trying to do that would help land a non-accounting role in industry.

I don’t think it’ll help you get a job as much as you think it will. If you’re dead set on leaving you’re better off just setting strict boundaries and logging off early to take classes. It’ll suck but it’ll be much better for finding your next job

I think it would be hard to sell yourself as having the appropriate skills without being able to point to a boot camp, degree, relevant work experience, or something.

Yup, my bf was just hiring a senior dev team member and had over 200 applications. No way someone with some self taught courses would even hit the phone interview list.

Just coast at work if you’re dead set in finding a new job. It’ll take a while before they let you go

Try to find a work that will more manageable work experience and who has needs for those skill sets. Often you can transfer within the company in private more easily. Or just keep learning and do projects that you can show case for the role after. But make sure you are giving yourself realistic time line.

Job base salary presented by HR during screening interview was $130-$145k. I have 3-5 years more experience and more education compared to the posting requirements (BA required, I have a MS). I love the position and what it entails, but was hoping to reach $150-$160 base salary. If offered the position, is this a reasonable ask? This is for big pharma, data analytics in New England.

I’m sending an email to female partner in a leadership position (never met) to set up a meeting to introduce myself. My plan is to send her a short email, giving some background about myself and let her know I want to connect to introduce myself. During the meeting, I plan to discuss my key projects, ask about her vision and how I can help her/which initiatives could participate. I’m up for Sr Mgr promotion and making a good impression is critical. Any tips? anything else I should prep?

I feel I am kinda lost about to do next after working in the agency analytics world for 5 year. Definitely want to switch to tech as the pay is higher and the work looks more interesting to me. Couple of paths that I have been considering: data scientist, data engineering, product analytics. Would like to be in more technical roles for the next couple of years. And would maybe like to be in product manager/manager role after that. What type of role would be the next best step.

Does it bother anyone else when a partner won't let you get a word in during a client meeting? I pitched the case and we were told that the client chose us in significant part because of my relevant technical expertise. Further, the client has specifically requested that I attend the client meetings. Not really sure the best way to manage the situation.

Halloween inspired me, so here's a scary thought. Wouldn't career building from IC to say CTO be that much easier where tech isn't the mission?

If you can navigate the politics, the opportunities for impact seem remarkable. Prove yourself with a few successes, network to impress just one exec tired of being in the stone age, and wham--you're a director with all the opportunities to grow this thing into your own org. Automate all the things. Learn on the way, obviously. Next thing you know: CTO.
