I consistently do 10-14 hour days. I worked for a boutique before my MBA and worked about 7-8 hours a day then. It’s completely different - there’s a culture of excellence and over delivering which means that there’ll normally always be an expectation to do a few extra hours of work after your 6pm check out

like

It’s true. You do have to make sacrifices but if you are the kind of person that is willing to dedicate more time to work than the average person then it’s a very meritocratic place that rewards those who perform well. This is also not unique to strategy consulting right, think of the other high end careers like Big Law, IBD, PE etc. where it’s it’s just as bad or worse

I think 55 is about the average for me. This was mentioned above, but worth emphasizing this is very much loaded Monday through Wednesday and a bit Thursday. Probably 12-14 hours M-W, ~10 Thursday and 8 Friday. So yes, it isn’t THAT bad in aggregate, but M-W are still pretty bad. The expectation is definitely to work after dinner on those days.

The pressure is definitely much worse - gotta love the up or out model. Good luck! Doesn't seem easy but I hope you at least love your job (or that the salary is good enough to make you stay a bit longer). Thank you for your insight, it definitely helps my reflexion!

12-16 hr days are common, but I’ve never had to work a weekend. Occasionally I work an hour or two to just get ahead of the week.

like

Sorry I should say this is M-Th; Fridays probably work 6-8 hours max

like

I haven’t worked over 50 hours 🤷🏻‍♂️

like

It ranges. I average 55-60 hours, but on a case currently where the team and I have had some 70 hour weeks.

like

Yeah I’ve done weekend work only a handful of times in my 4 years here. To be clear 55-60 hours usually means 47-52 hours Monday- Thursday because of lighter Fridays. The work is usually really front loaded each week because of client meetings. You should be expecting 12+ hour days as the norm M-TH not 10+.

65 has been average for me. Only worked (maybe 2 weekends) in 2.5 years

BCG1 any specific industry?

I have 2 reserves: one that has slide formats that I like using depending on the insights I want to deliver/story I want to tell; and the other focused on my specialty that I can pick and customize to explain something or frame it up for a client, for those I have it categorized by topic

like

Based on anecdotal evidence in this app seems like Deloitte doesn’t set good boundaries re weekend work.

@D1 I'm C! It honestly doesn't feel like a choice, but maybe thats because I want to be high performer! But yes i think you're right, it seems like MBB its 60hours project work - i honestly wouldn't get involved in anything else other than maybe recruiting if im already doing 60 hours project work

Depends on your case but I went from B4 to Bain and work considerably longer hours on average. At its worst it’s not that much worse than the spikes I would have at B4 (~70 hrs) but its just consistently long hours without the long periods of “chill” times on cases I would get at B4. At Bain I very rarely worked less than ~55-60 hrs.

And do you regret going from B4 to Bain considering that the WLB is considerably worse? I know it depends on personality/goals and that some people are much more career driven than others, but I still feel like everyone needs a semblance of balanced lifestyle.

It depends on your team

Depends widely on the project. 65 hr is probably average

LBS vs CBS? For context: Sponsored MBB (US office, non-NYC). Want a big city school. Could potentially stay behind in NYC after but not married to it (odds go up for staying in the broader Northeast). Probably wouldn’t stay in London unless I had a really compelling reason. Somewhat interested in tech but that’s not why I’m going to b-school. Given all that: Mainly interested in commentary on the school experiences themselves!

I need advice on when I am, and am not, permitted to buy publicly traded stock shares in which (A) the company is a firm client and (B) I did work for the company. In both scenarios, I lack material nonpublic information about the company; however, I also don’t want to risk the SEC asking questions. Is a 6 month or year-long cooling off period a good rule of thumb? Say after the IPO and doing zero work for the company? The trade would be under $10,000. Any advice would be appreciated. TIA.

I am currently a fund accountant and am thinking about jumping ship to a new firm. I’m at a small fund and although the culture and WLB are great, I can see that there is no opening for assistant controller coming any time soon. Is it a bad if I consider looking elsewhere when I’ve only been there for a year? I hear it’s a strong market for candidates so I don’t want to miss out on a potential better opportunity for my career. Greatly appreciate any input.
