Is more than 2 weeks notice expected for litigation associates? I’m starting a new job in January and am worried if I give notice this week (4 weeks notice) that I may not be paid the whole 4 weeks and will be asked to leave at some point.

Being asked to leave and then just chillin until January legitimately sounds like a dream come true. if they say leave now then you can collect unemployment if that’s your concern

like

Yeah I just need the paycheck

It’s definitely not expected, so if you would rather get your paycheck, take whatever PTO won’t rollover to next year and do the bare minimum for 2 weeks, then give notice

like

That’s what I think I’ll do. I know if I give my notice now they’ll be noticing me not doing anything and will probably try to load me up with work.

Typically if you put in notice and you are asked to leave before that notice is up the employer will pay out the remainder of your time

Not sure about this. I’ve experienced the opposite and never heard of the notice period being paid out if you’re terminated early, but a good company could choose to do this.

I gave 2 week notice at my firm and they told me to leave the next day and didn't pay me for those 2 weeks. You definitely don't owe them 4 weeks.

Take some solace in that if they tell you to fuck off early and don't pay you, you can claim unemployment lol.

Look up your state statutes. In my state if an employee has given notice and are ask to stop working prior to that (for no cause purpose) then the notice period must be paid out.

I’ve worked for two firms. Very different mindsets.

The first firm I left because they were a miserable place to work. I was about 95% certain that if I told them I’d be leaving in 2 weeks, I would have been out on my ass same day. How? Because I’d seen them do it to several people. So, I stayed a bit late, cleaned what little of personal effects I still had in my office, left my key on the desk, went home and emailed my immediate resignation.

The place I am at now is very respectful. They always let people last the rest of the time they have given notice for. In fact, girl I used to work with went to a different firm, gave 4 weeks notice, and then my current firm sent her flowers on day 1 of her new place. I wouldn’t think twice of giving plenty of notice.

So, to me, it depends on the kind of loyalty and respect they’ve shown you.

Some good news after almost 11 months of applying and interviews and lots of rejections finally got an offer! In NYC small firm, ex big law folks, no billable hours, niche practice area, appearance of forwarded thinking firm, remote till who knows when, emphasis on pro bono initiatives and building book of business. The catch salary. Was making around 140k at last firm with 1800 billable. Offer is 85k and revist to bump to around 100k in several months after review (plus discretionary bonus)

Would you feel comfortable telling HR that your service line’s culture sucks and name the individuals who cause it? Or is a better approach saying it’s the leadership in general creating a negative and toxic culture? How effective are these conversations really? Trying to assess if there’s any point in bringing this up. Obviously HR works for the company and an employee sharing their thoughts on the unsupportive, cold leaders could bite me in the long run.

My firm has a collections budget (80% of your billable rate x 1850 hours) and an hourly budget that must be met in order to be eligible for a bonus. The firm cares very little about originations and will reward someone for making their collections over someone who brings in new work. I missed my collection budget due to some odd timing with a client, but originated more than all my peers so no bonus for me. I’ve been at this same mid level firm for 9 years and it’s all I know. Is this normal??
