Is my boss BSing me?
I work at a tech company.
After 4 years working on the same team being the only 1 designer for all design related matters, ~230 projects, directed many of them with talented artist, studios.
Approximately 60-70hrs a week. No time for vacation, always working over weekends, no holiday break (there’s no back up).
I’m still rated as junior - low level designer ;)
I was told that I’m not experienced enough because I didn’t learn from any directors.

4 years at 60hrs/wk? Jfc. You are being not only BSed but actively gaslit. The average I’ve seen from Designer to Sr Designer is 2-3years.

You better be making bank (likely not), otherwise re-read what you just wrote and start sending resumes today.

Yeah I’d literally be doing interviews while they pay me. Ain’t no way.

I would move on ASAP. There is a big shortage of talent…. No need to suffer through that.

like

modern-day slavery - RUN! and write on your next resume that you aren't a junior. you're at least a mid-level. ignore whatever they told you.

Sounds like time to find a new tech company! 4 years is a good tenure anyways and you can bring all that experience to a company that will appreciate it and won't string you along.

like

Unless you have a bunch of NDAs I would document all of your best projects, update your portfolio and resume.. and apply for a new position. There are other companies out there that will actually appreciate you and treat you fairly.

like

Get the heck outta there!! They are BSing you!

like

Ya, this sounds like a no brainer. Don’t waste your time trying to fix your current situation. Even if you convince them to promote you and give you a raise, that’s won’t magically fix everything and change how they see you. Find a new opportunity and don’t look back.

like

You should start looking elsewhere. Any manager that tells you you’re not ready for a position but doesn’t tell you where you need to improve doesn’t have your best interests at heart.

For your situation, going off of what you’ve provided, you’re being gas lit/BS’d

like

You are being abused. Start looking.

GET OUT. As UXD1 said you’re a mid level - senior level designer. Put that in your resume, polish your portfolio and get out 🔜 .

like

Byeeeeee! They don't even know how to grow you -- even if it were somehow true that you haven't grown in the time you've been there. It's ridiculous to not give you a mentor/director and then keep you a junior because you don't have one. SHADY AF. Everyone is right: GTFO.

like

That’s an insane amount of work & tenure to still be junior - I got hired in as an intermediate out of school (around 1-2 years of contract / freelance experience during school). You’d be senior anywhere else (even @ FAANG). Get out asap

like

You need to move to a different company and say you’re a senior designer. You CLEARLY have the experience to back up the claim, don’t let your current manager fool you.

like

Sounds like you have leverage

like

Yes, they’re BSing you. 4 years as a junior is not appropriate to the amount of responsibilities you have.

like

I wouldn’t stay at a company that doesn’t see my value. If this was my situation I would find another job and leave ASAP.

like

Get out now!!

Need to give new company a start date and can't decide how much 'time off' between jobs I can push for. The new role will be pretty hectic so I'd like a break (and, well, 2020 amirite) but don't want them to think I'm not keen
