Is now a bad time to lateral? Getting a jump from midlaw to biglaw. Figure they wouldn’t offer I’d the work wasn’t there, but…..

I wouldn't turn down an offer I otherwise wanted on the basis of the current economic state.

Definitely not a great time. Proceed at your own risk, but the extent of the risk probably depends on practice area. In your case, if you really want to transition to biglaw, it could be a risk worth taking.

Is now a bad time to lateral? If you’re in a decent spot (not like a truly awful toxic environment) and making a truly lateral move (like jumping from one Cravath scale to another) I wouldn’t do that, not worth whatever minor benefit you get from switching firms, and there’s a chance the new place is as bad or worse than the current place but you have less reputation to fall back on etc.

But moving from midlaw to biglaw I would guess is a big pay bump (now and especially down the line with lockstep increases which hugely outpace midlaw) and chance for you to improve the types of deals/cases you’re cutting your teeth on and improve your exit options/general career prospects down the line. I’d take it. Agreed that firms will be cautious right now with hiring and hire only if they’re sure they have enough for you, it’s not 2021 hot market anymore.

My firm is still pretty desperate for associates because the work is just not slowing down and honestly doesn’t seem like it will. I’m no expert though 🤷‍♀️

I start in October 🤞

Our firm is growing fast and we need to add another attorney to keep up with the work. Our compensation package is 20-30% higher than what others firms in our area are offering. However, I’m still finding it difficult to get qualified associate to even apply for the position. I think part of the problem may be because we are located in a mid-sized city rather than a major metro area. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to attract talent when you are a newer small firm in a mid-size market?
