As someone who went to one of these private school, the utility has really been:
1. headstart in terms of the competitiveness of the real world. the kids in private school are competitive, and the competition starts early, there was more power politics in gr. 9 than there was in university.
2. networks that play out post-undergrad. Not uncommon for my bosses to have children who have gone to my school. I find I keep in touch most with those from my hs and that network exists in many cities.
3. broad based education. What did end up getting taught and the environment we were in did I believe give us all a better well rounded education. I feel comfortable conversing in all sorts of topics, you dont always get that elsewhere.
How it hasnt helped:
1. getting into university, if anything grade deflation and competition for ECs made it harder
2. limited world view. You definitely normalize what isnt actually normal, but overall, I feel that this isnt a huge con, as you still adapt in university and beyond.
3. teachers arent always better. in fact, i would say many were worse, this was a bigger issue in hs than now. I dont feel that the tuition really made for better teachers.
Overall, as a student and immediately postgrad, i felt private school was a waste of money, my view has softened since and now I see the benefit of the networks you develop and the connections you make.
Super good take…and spot on regarding teachers. Big misconception that private schools have better teachers. It’s typically opposite, most teachers aim for public first then go the private route when they can’t get a job (source: I was raised by educators and have an absurd amount in my friends and family).
In my opinion it is highly dependent on which private schools. Not all private schools are the same.
On public schools. There also a massive swing in quality too depending on your neighbour hood…for example, if you elementary school feeds into Lawrence park for a high school…you almost don’t need private school.
D1, that’s how I feel about this issue. If you have access to a good public school with some outside supports, and aim for magnet programs, you can most likely achieve similar outcomes for a fraction of the cost. It’s not quite the same network but the impact of that can be highly variable. When I look at people I know or data, I just don’t see significantly better outcomes to the point where it justifies the cost of private school.
Public schools are like any schooling system, some will rank high in teaching quality, while others will rank high in gang violence. Research the schools in your area and go from there. I attended both private and public, I noticed private might give you a tad of an edge but both roads lead to the same end anyway. Low ROI imo for private schools

My cousins went to UCC and they're super spoiled and bratty. They just ended up going to the same universities as everyone else anyway (mac and UofT). I wouldn't say there was an ROI for them
160k invest it at age 18 and you’re one your way to a decent chunk of your retirement fund there. That said, people who are spending 40k a year likely have sone extra to give to their kids when they turn 18 anyway
Half of my Master degree class went to a private school (elementary and high school). I went to public. When it came to the recruiting season, I was the 2nd in class to get a job. Most of the private school folks struggled for a while before they landed an offer … fast forward to today, they are not any more successful than I am.
So I would say that private schools are not worth it.
I went to public school in Toronto and I feel I did well. I met / know some individuals who went to private school and they are not any more successful than me. Some I notice depended on their parents and sure some got some really good contacts / networks but they also only takes you so far. If you can’t perform or meet expectations you will be moved out eventually.
