Is QB or Gamma a good place for a ML eng who wants to become a c-suite exec at some point? Do people get the same training, and career path?

Same training at gamma as well for the consulting skillset. Have had a couple of exits at the more senior levels into Chief Data / Analytics Officer at large, popular companies, but not to many since gamma hasn’t been around for so long. Example companies are Ikea, Expedia. On most cases our role is to be part of the problem solving but a large proportion of the slide making does get farmed out to the generalist consultants.

Same training for QB. Not sure about becoming executive though. You can hustle and develop your core consulting skills there but there’s less expectation for slide making and problem solving.

We are in the same teams. The DS are in the client meeting. It’s just that most time the don’t care to take ownership of the content and the integrative does it: set the agenda and the story flow, design the slides etc, and collaborate with the DS to put the data in. There’s no expectation that the DS would drive that part of the effort. It would be most appreciated and recognized if one did. But as it’s not the expectation, unless you are proactive, you won’t get that experience. You’d just play your role.

Yes at every client checking the QB analyst is present and expected to explain details as needed.

@MC1 and @BCG1, how do interactions with the slide makers and the client on a typical engagement go? Are the data consultants forced out of meetings as a result of not having been the ones to do the slide making?

My thought would be that exec critical skills are strategic thinking and an ability to understand businesses in breadth. I'd think you could get both if the data you worked on was varied and the experiments you thought up or managed were contextually thought through. This leaves me wondering is sales and presentation skills are left lacking, which in turn makes me wonder if data consultants are somehow kept from attaining these to an extent necessary for managerial career growth. Or am I missing a piece?

Gamma and generalists are in the same team, same meetings, same briefings, etc. Depending on the issue, problem solving is either driven by Gamma (eg quant marketing) or by the generalist (eg PE valuations) or both (eg Covid response).
Frankly, I’m convinced that this type of hybrid teams is the future of consulting as most of the topics we deal with become more and more quant and data-driven.

Just so we are clear data science is not a good path to the csuite.

Was more responding to your overall comments since you were discussing c-suites in your first couple comments, but I get your point.

And yea, time will tell! And hopefully, we'll see more leaderships with DS/ML background :)

😂

Thanks for the info. What kind of products do people work on at QB?

I meant both client projects and internal tools.

The main (male) partner I work with keeps telling me to sleep train my 1 year old and this mostly comes up when I mention I have spotty availability in the evenings. I generally like him and he has kids - I don’t think his comment is mean spirited and I think he is trying only to help, but I am not going to make a parenting decision just to bill more hours. As a mom - is there any way I can level with him on this? Also I absolutely support anyone who sleep trained - it’s just not for me atm.

Looking for perspective here! I’m worried that my ex is going to refuse to pay child support and take me to court over it. And I’m worried that somehow support won’t be given. In your collective experiences, do judges award child support in 50/50 custody cases if the husband makes more a good deal more income? My ex makes 60% of hhi and I make 40%, but live in a HCOL area so really need support to help pay rent. My lawyer says I can’t make the rent case because I can move somewhere cheaper.

Not to be too doom and gloom, but does there need to be a genuine discussion about how feasible the current Big Four model is (UK)? I have never seen the situation as bad as it is now. High calibre students are not interested in 3 years of exams and no personal life for the low pay of 29k pa!!). It is currently normal for there to be more partners and directors in a team than E grades/ associates. How long until the “conveyor belt” stops and there is simply no one left to do the work being won?

Considering a pivot to data science, and I’ve heard MS in CS is better than stats (background: Econ UG, with a couple stats and 1 CS class). GA tech MSOSC seems to be a great program, but it seems they expect one to have a bit more of a CS background. Would it make sense for me to spend a year or so self-studying for a few hours a week (all I have unfortunately) through a free open source curriculum then apply for a masters in CS, or is there a smarter path? Can self-study alone land a job?
