Anybody know any remote reinsurance roles?
I just got an email from a recruiter from Google!
Omgomgomgomg
He said that the position is in the Bay Area or New York. I haven’t replied the email. I don’t think we can move to those cities, but I don’t want to lose this opportunity. Does anyone know if Google does remote jobs within US?

Remote working is on the rise, insofar as it’s effectively replacing the antiquated concept formerly known as “vacation."
Has to be on the rise as a reaction to the open-office.
👆🏼yes to this. After moving to an open office family-style-table work space, most of us basically doubled or tripled the amount of time we work remote.
On the rise in tech world. I work in a fully distributed company, 800 employees
I’ve noticed most people that work full time at “old school” agencies find it insulting. Or small agencies that have lower budgets. They think you’re stealing. None of which makes any sense. It’s usually the same people who think it’s tacky to use Google Docs instead of Indesign.
It’s cheaper not to pay for an office building. So there’s only one end to this.
I have been working at a completely remote agency for about 9 months now and I completely agree. As a creative I have the surroundings I need to be inspired, and also when we need to dig in and put in some longer hours, at least we are at home. The team is dedicated to making great work and I have seen more work actually get produced here than at other, more traditional, agencies I have been at. I love the team I work with, and working remote in advertising is like an oasis at the end of a desert. Also I’m working out instead of commuting right now. I’m energized and feel great and ready for my 9am call. No more Sunday Scaries too. Win Win!
On the rise? Maybe.
A trend? No. Trends are just something companies grab onto and implement without really understanding what it is, like open floor plan work spaces.
Effective? Yes, for those who are professional and are interested in doing good work, while balancing that with their personal life.
Working remote is not "working from home." Working remote is the ability to have an employee team that varies in capabilities and experience, of which can scale at any time due to client business needs, whether that be organic or new business.
Does it allow a company to be more competitive to traditional "brick-and-mortar" companies? Yes. Is it less effective? No.
In terms of employees abusing the remote work model, sure there will be those who do, but that happens in traditional companies, just in many different ways.
Working remote is not just about cutting costs but rather a business approach to having the right teams with the right experience, doing the best work possible for their clients, all while being professional and balancing their personal life.
I have worked as part of a remote team for the past (almost) 2 years, and have never been more productive and aligned with the company vision for it's business and clients.
But all it takes is for three (then five, then seven) to start abusing the system for the carping to begin about some people having special privileges and suddenly the whole idea starts to look terrible. Only works when people take personal responsibility, which seems to be a dying trait.
I have been working for a completely remote agency for about 5 months now...it is fantastic. The teams work hard, do great work without the physical structure most agencies still cling too. In fact, at most of the agencies I have worked for, half of the team/teams are in offices stretching from NY, London, Chicago etc. so you are forced to work “remotely” from an office cube. Get rid of the cube. We are already working remotely from places we would rather not be... just be somewhere u want to be. It’s amazing how the quality of your creative life increases and in turn the work becomes better.
It’s not a reaction, it’s a progression.
After 8 months of working fully remote (10 years of agency in office experience prior) I can ensure you that remote workers actually work harder than the office ones. The number one problem is the sense of isolation. You have to summon a lot of internal motivation to work and to socialize, which eventually can turn into a habit, but getting there is going to challenge all your previous work routines and experiences
We have implemented WAH since moving to open floor plan. Biggest concern - how will new junior staff learn??
Automattic 1 sees both the possibilities...AND the challenges, very clearly. It takes a very disciplined individual to pull it off well on a long term basis. Especially when you are doing work that is strongly “creative idea” based. You have to create on your own the stimulation that traditionally came from spontaneously bouncing ideas off of others in an office. On the other hand, if what you are doing is more administratively or system driven (e.g., buying programmatic media), then it is more straightforward. Truly accepting the challenges and being consistently self disciplined is the key in any case.
Are you hiring at Automattic? 😘 I’ve always loved that company. Seems like a genuinely positive wholesome culture.
Currently working on a pitch with 3 others, all of which are in different places. Slack helps us work it out.
Which agencies are completely remote? Thanks for all the thoughtful replies, great to see it working for so many of you.

I do it without asking permission. I have a second office that I pay for. My commute is so long, I would otherwise never see my family.
