I’d tend to say yes, but it’s one of those borderline firms and depends on what definition of big law you’re using. If size, then probably. If salary or ppp, probably not. Prestige—eh, they’re lower on the vault ranking but they’re still on there.
Yeah, there are definitely a number of firms that match the prevailing first year scale, but then offer less than market increases every subsequent year.

Why are you asking?

I would say meh. They used to be very heavy hitters as lobbyists in DC. Tommy Boggs was one of the most powerful people in DC. But he died a few years back. They still have some folks with lobbying pull but are no longer the power brokers they once were.
In areas outside public policy they have always had a rep as being second tier or worse. The merger with Squire Sanders reinforced that perception. Squire was a OK, Patton Boggs was ok but the whole was and I think still is the sum of ok parts. There are some good lawyers there but outside the lobbying sphere (and maybe even inside it) they aren’t going to get anybody’s most important work.
So, they are large and have some names, but I doubt they make anyone list of firms to fear.
They’re big law by definition not by prestige or reputation
Did you just make it rhyme…?
