Not at all.
Agree with D1, but the performance period runs from March on so your first PM cycle will literally be like 5 weeks. Your first full cycle of review will start in the beginning of March. Promotions aren't on a normal Jan-Dec calendar year. I'm
Really?
@OP - unless they effed-up so badly in your offer that it is evident you are truly a level below where you should be, just relax. You're entering with ~5 weeks in the performance year. Take the year to learn the firm and start to build a network that will support you as you move-up.
Starting this January and getting promoted in 6 months? It's doable but uphill battle.
No
I started December 21st and got promoted in 6 months. Never say never.
OP - find a strong SM/M/PPMD to work with. Execute capability at next level. Socialize with your coach. Understand what the firm will get if they do promote you "early". We are comfortable in "another year can't hurt" so answer that question. Do something outside client execution that's market developing (I wrote a white paper that was circulated with multiple clients and industries).
^ you'll want to follow this: 1) absolutely kill it on your client project and get top ratings (forget it if you don't get staffed right away) 2) get super involved in high-visibility, high-impact initiatives 3) set up coffee/lunch chats with Senior Managers and PPDs (at least 1 per week) 4) be vocal about your intentions and if your counselor is not a high performer you might want to immediately request a switch to someone a respected PPD recommends. You need to give leadership a reason to believe you deserve to get promoted over someone with more tenure
Echoing D1 - performance year and promotion dates are different. You have barely 1.4 months until the performance year end.
Why are you in such a hurry to be promoted, you should come in a the correct level. Take the time to learn what we mean when we say high impact and high visibility. Grow your network
Use your weekly networking meetings with Senior Managers and PPDs (#3) to join their initiatives. For example, when you meet, mention you'd like to gain proposal experience- do they know of any going on (someone will). Or figure out their background and the type of work they do and ask if there is work in their capability's CoP or another initiative where you could add value and network
Also, you need to know this is all based on luck since it is super contingent on immediately getting onto a project when you start and having a good counselor. I was told by multiple people that I should've gotten a 1 rating my first year but didn't because my counselor wasn't well networked and didn't vocalize my story well.
OP in Consulting at least ... they want you to be performing for 6 mths at the next level before promotion so think they would of hired you into the level you aspire for if your 1.5mth goal was feasible. Hate to be a Debbie Downer but I was exactly in your boat had a milestone a little over 2 years out, didn't have to do my first performance year as only was with firm for 1.5 mths then that next year I got a 2 rating and accelerated promotion. That 1st year at next level I got a 1 rating and had the opportunity to explore accelerating my time at that level and did not - which for me was the right choice as it really helped me expand my network, and try a lot of different project work without getting married too soon. If you want to have options be patient, if you know exactly what you want to do ... find the people that play in that space and try your best ... I don't see much downside - this isn't a trade.
Up to Manager but not to SM
Arghhhhhhhh ok
No
@D2 any tips?
You will want that year.
@D2 - how do I gauge "strong"? I chose the wrong people to coattail at KPMG :/
