Is startup experience valued in accounting? I worked at a B4 for a little under a year, got laid off, and took an opportunity as the sole staff accountant at a pre-IPO startup that’s preparing to IPO. Been here for around 9 months. I have a hand in contributing to the design of our accounting processes which feels meaningful but ultimately the controller has the final say, and I don’t decide anything requiring judgement. Would I be fit for senior accountant industry positions after a year here?

Start-up experience isn’t really special (sorry). But IPO experience is definitely valuable given that it can be incredibly rigorous and is usually a one time thing for companies.

Stay here and make sure you get stock! You’ll have your fingerprints all over the company soon enough. Think of it as your little baby. The IPO process is its first day of High School. There’s a lot of raising to do and when graduation comes around, you’ll reap the rewards of your hard work. 😌

There's such a small chance that a startup with one staff accountant is actually going to IPO, they probably throw the idea around a bunch, and OP probably isn't astute enough to realize where they are in the process, if at all...

Why not stick around and grow with the start up?

I’m in my mid-40s with a 7 year old and baby. Is it too late for me to back into public accounting? I was laid off last year and found a great job in a large bank. I miss the flexibility, challenge and rigor of PA. I would love your opinions. Has the ship sailed for me in PA? If I go back I would be an experienced senior; maybe, a year or so from manager.

Planing on moving to NYC in the next 3 years with my husband. If I stay at my current job, I’ll be manager by the time I leave for NYC or should I make the jump to B4 soon? Does “B4 preferred” outweigh my chances even if I’m a manager when comes down to it?

Started freelancing last year after being laid off and have been trying to make short term stints work until I find the right gig. However, I feel that most opportunities I can get end up being less than ideal. Dry clients (pharma), chaotic schedules and supplemental work that would never make my portfolio. Debating taking a full time job I’m not that excited about just to get out of this cycle.... Not sure if freelancing just isn’t for me or it’s the current climate. Any advice?

Here is my idea for a startup! I collect all the data from career transitions and use Data Analytics to predict the most likely career transitions. I could start with consulting. What do you guys think about this? I would be able to predict based on your firm(mbb, big4), your experience, which role you are likely to move (Faang pm, strategy manager, move to mbb). I have all the data to do this, but wanted your thoughts. Would the output of this be relevant to you?
