No, I’ve taken minutes to multiple days to revise an old contract. It is entirely dependent on the contract’s purpose, length and complexity. But, you should probably talk to the client or the senior attorney who assigned the work or handles the client and make sure they want you to take that long. They may just tell you to pivot to a different form altogether.
I am fairly sure he didn’t budget the 8 hours and the time has been spent. He just wants to know if he’ll be yelled at for doing it.

As a young associate just about everything you do will take longer than you thought it would. Whether the client feels it was a justified amount of time depends in large part on the client. Whether it could have been done as well for less depends on the lawyer.
Your job is not really to worry about whether doing a great job takes 4 or 8 hours. Reworking a document that needs reworking can take as much time as it takes.
