Is taking a government consulting role a dead end if long term I want to stay in the private sector? I’m currently at a boutique risk firm (3500 employees) where I also do some transaction services. A friend is offering to refer me to a higher level valuation and transaction focused role within a B4 government & public sector practice.

From a pure technical skill perspective this feels like a step up, but does moving to government and public sector position me worse than if I stay in risk?

I know this is a broad question but I’ve heard that government consulting can be a dead end and I’m trying to figure out if I should save my referral for a different role.

I don’t think so. It is all in how you sell it. If you go somewhere with a fed and comm practice, you can keep your foot in the commercial space. If anyone asks, you can say that you thought that it was wise to consult for the govt during a recession and most would get that. I know hedge fund ppl who are unemployed now :/

If you’re going to b4 you should be able to transfer to commercial if you take the initiative, I know people who have done so.

It is hard to switch from federal to commercial. You are better off trying to get into commercial advisory at a bigger firm from where you are. That way, it is only 1 jump instead of 2. Another possibility is top 10 MBA then MBB.

Does anyone ever question the possibility of going to law school?

I’m a 23yo female legal assistant working/living in Canada. I am completing my BA in hopes of continuing with law school after. But, I just turned 23 and I’m anxious about my love life and starting a family. I haven’t had a boyfriend since 2019 and I’ve poured my heart and soul into my education & career.

I’ve always wanted to go to law school since age 14. But I also want a husband/kids. I don’t feel like I can have both.

Hi there!
I completed the last round of an interview (presentation) last week. Originally they said they would be calling my references & then make an offer accordingly.
Today they updated that they'd like me to travel to their HQ (based in Nordics & I'm in London) for the final round where I'd meet the CEO, the hiring manager and a couple of people in the team.
I don't think I'm the only one in the process - even though initially the last round was the presentation.
What are your thoughts?

Offering advice to job seekers who go around recruiters and message hiring teams, execs, etc. You are putting the Recruiters job in danger. If a Recruiter declines you or doesn’t choose to reach out, it is because the hiring team declined you, or you don’t have the experience. You will most likely not be considered for future roles because of this. When I see people giving advice to reach outside the Recruiter, it’s bad advice. Very rare is this a good idea.

Should I complain to a firm's HR if the interviewers laughed at my answer during an interview? Maybe it sounded scripted but it was still heartfelt and genuine: my immigration story and how that made me appreciate the rule of law. I said it soo many times during OCI's that maybe it eventually sounded robotic, but for the interviewers to laugh and one to say sarcastically "nice elevator pitch", I thought was rude. Thoughts?

Hello, I have 4 years of experience between Financial decision support and pricing. However, I feel like my experience is too narrowed to how my current company operates. I am looking to pivot into consulting at one of the big4 ( for ~2-3 years)or any other consulting firm to have a well rounded experience that could be applicable to any industry. Any advices ?or thoughts ?

Left McKinsey for a Fintech corporate last year. Really disappointed to see bonuses given out (cash is equivalent to half month salary, equity vested over 5 yes also not great) after getting the 5/5 rating and business doing well overall. Doubting my decision to come to industry. Is this the norm? Feels really low as historically variable has been a big enough component for me to pay down loans/invest.
