Is taking a job at Deloitte worth a 5k salary cut to get the name on my resume? Thinking of working there for two years then exiting to somewhere better.

I agree with D5, everything in life is a gamble, it’s just where you place your chips. If you stay where you are for another 2 years vs taking the cut and doing 2 years at Deloitte what do you see giving you the highest probability of continuing to grow your career to where you aspire to end up?

This strategy is usually not a good one. But depends on pay/work/role/individual, what you ultimately want to do, and what is already on your resume. But assuming you are literally just going for the reputation and otherwise would not be interested in working there - no that's not worth it. Find something you actually want to do at a place you actually want to work. It doesn't have to be your dream job if you still need a stepping stone to get there, but it should have other redeeming qualities.

Where are you coming from? Deloitte is a boost but it’s not worth a downgrade in pay

like

The answer is relative to where you’re starting. If it’s a lesser-known and respected firm, then maybe good to trade up for 2 years before exiting. If it’s comparable, then don’t waste the time and money on a switch.

like

That’s what I’m doing. At the very worst, parlay D into a huge jump somewhere else in Consulting too if you don’t want to immediately go to industry.

likefunny

Thanks. And I gotcha. I agree. But you have the ability to bolster that brand for yourself and leverage it to make it work for you, more so than just having a regular job. I don’t agree with taking the pay cut (but I don’t OP situation) but moving to D from wherever he/she is, if done right, is a strong stepping stone. Same with any other b4 firm. If they have options, great. But if this is the only one, I’m sticking to my original recommendation (assuming they have a plan for leveraging it like I did).

Nah

like

Have you tried negotiating salary with D?

like

Why wouldn’t you set the TC expectation higher at Deloitte?

likehelpful

More work and less pay. I don’t think it’s worth it. It’s a big world, you can find something else and exit well.

like

You should get at least what you’re currently making at D, I don’t believe they would want you to take a pay cut early in your career so if you haven’t try negotiating

like

Nope

like

In normal times, maybe (assuming you’re coming from an unknown firm), but in current times with how much every firm needs people - absolutely not.

like

I took a 5k increase coming from industry and am planning on doing exactly what you said. Stay for 1-2 years then leave. Luckily, I’ve been here for almost a year and so far my work hasn’t been much different from my previous job in terms of workload/hours but ymmv

like

Depends on where you work right now... if you are in a low tier firm then it probably makes sense (not just the name, but the experience you'll gain).

like

Big 4 doesn’t give you a status by itself, it’s rather the exposure you get by working with dozens of Clients as a consultant.

like

I disagree. A big4 gives you a status, especially for your average industry company plus Fortune X companies.

likefunny

Yes

funny

Not worth it honestly. They will work you "to death" that you won't even have time to apply to jobs.

like

You can work at any of the Big 4 /Accenture in a consulting group and get similar levels of “brand prestige”. No reason to accept the current offer that’s potentially worse than the position you’re in.

like

Has the Deloitte reputation gone down that much in the last 5-6 years? When I exited D 6 years ago (SC, S&O), was able to parlay it into offers from FAANG and corporate strategy at F500 companies. $5k payout should be worth it if future exit options are better than what you have today

like

Also, no offense, I don't know you, but Deloitte isn't so special that you should take a pay cut to work there. You're better than that.

like

Depends on your starting point, but probably yes. Try to negotiate if possible for a higher. Former Accenturite/Deloittitian

like

I ended up rejecting D since the base was only 6k more. You know what's missing on your resume and how D or any B4 will help with that. I had some decent F500 experience so D's offer did not make sense. Also, If you have cleared D's interview, would you not be able to ace interviews with the other 4 ? Best of luck !!!

Hi wonderful ladies hoping to get some more POVs. I recently ended a long relationship where we were living together - I’m 28 & have never lived alone. My parents generously offered for me to move back home ~ 1hour outside city or I could move into a new apt in city for 2.3k a month (salary is 95k). I’m still struggling with the breakup & just not sure if I should stay home & save plus be closer toparents or pay up & get more comfortable being alone with easier access to a social/dating scene.

I only plan on staying in consulting for about 2 more years then off for an MBA. Would it be more worth it to take a level and pay raise at a different big4 moving to senior level rather than going to associate/analyst level at MBB? These are my two choices at the moment. I want to position myself best for post MBA jobs in industry. Salary will def be lower at MBB compared to the senior level at big4 so not sure if it’s worth the trade off in experience.

Cross posting this but could use the female perspective — Got a really substantial (~40%) mid year raise after I brought in a basically unsolicited competing offer from one of our peers. My firm typically only adjusts salary on an annual basis in March, and I’m pretty worried I’ll see a smaller than normal annual raise this spring to “make up for” my out of sequence mid year raise. Any advice on advocating for myself to ensure that doesn’t happen?

A recruiter reached out to me for a new role but it would be in my old city. I'd be pretty fine with both roles themselves. But the NYC one would pay about 140$ TC (not sure about bonus yet, this is a guess), and the non-NYC one would be maybe $25-30 more. Is the $ worth the city sacrifice?
