Is the flexibility in public accounting reserved for managers and up? I see a lot of talk about flexibility in PA, especially with WFH, but I’ve never experienced it. If I get a ping during business hours I’m expected to respond timely. Idk how people take an hour to go to the gym in the middle of the day.

Senior here, I have as much flexibility as I want and my staff do to a lesser extent. I expect them to be available during business hours but if something comes up and they need to flex I just that they let me know.

like

Yep, it is definitely earned. I have three staff, one I trust to work 9pm-9am if they wanted, they have good quality of work and don’t need babysitting. I have another that I have to hand hold and monitor task completion otherwise they will just sit at their desk 9 hours a day

like

“We don’t care when you’re working as long as you are always working”

It completely depends on the office, client, and team you work with. If your team is not flexible, move to one that is. Or learn to set better boundaries.

like

No. I start flexibility from staff level up. Everyone on my team is currently wfh and I train them up remotely. When covid hit, I was prepping excels (or onenote)of tasks to do that so they could work even if I was offline and I could catch up on status even if they weren't online (thanks to having kids during a pandemic! Lol)
I start assuming trust and setting general standards. If proven wrong/ they need more detailed explanations and need me there to answer questions, I am more hands on but am clear that if they need to be offline at a certain point or online at odd hours to just keep me apprised. This is so that I as their senior/ manager can ensure the work is setup for them to do and answer questions when they need them.

like

If you won’t be available during core hours you should let your team know by either 1) actively telling them 2) setting up a status message or out of office. Otherwise it is fair they expect you to be online. With that said, unless someone is away consistently during core hours I have no issue with my associates putting up a message that says “running an errand - back at 2” on a regular work day (assuming we aren’t trying to hit a deadline that day, etc).
It is legitimately harder for less experienced staff bc they require more support. So while theoretically you could work overnight, the reality is that less experienced folks need more overlap with their team for general direction, questions, training, etc.

like

By business hours you mean 8am to midnight, right? That’s my experience in PA in the last 8 years. 🙄

like

You have flexibility during non busy season. During busy season you’re glued to your laptop.

like

This is a new buzzword invented by PA advocates now that the “learning opportunities” has become old. Most industry companies provide these kinds of flexibility as well so long that you don’t abuse it.

I agree with this. It’s really just language to hide that the hours are brutal.

I had a lot of flexibility when I was in public - no one cared when I did whatever so long as it got done - I definitely agree with that. It’s just that the volume of work was constantly 60-70 hours a week. So not making a big deal of me going to the grocery store and doing some errands during typical business hours is just a distraction from the fact that the firm wants most of your waking life.

Considering switching from consulting to sales engineering/presales.

Getting clients engaged during the sales process, doing demos, and helping get them ramped up via workshops is the highlight of my work for me.

Curious about which level to aim for given that I'm coming in with 15+ YoE.

Also curious about switching away from the technology stack that I've mostly built my expertise around (EPM/CPM) to more broader analytics / SaaS toolsets... How hard is that transition?
