I’m sorry you’re going through this. I think unfortunately it depends on how you define success and how much you’re willing to sacrifice for your career! Im a high performing IC marketing manager at a midsize tech company in Austin and think I may have one of the last true 9-5s 😅. So those jobs are out there - but tbh I see people managers and execs working long hours, at least sometimes, and I’ve been interviewing for other companies with higher pay lately and really feeling like it’s a choice between moving up the ladder and having good work life balance. It’s frustrating because I’d like to progress professionally but not at the cost of my sanity!
Amen to this. 👏
The sad thing is, I read books written by executives and hear things like working long hours is a part of the job. It makes me sad that that's the way the system works, and that we're all sucked into a narrative that you have to be a slave to work to succeed. I'm curious to see, hear, and come up with ideas to change that reality.
I hear you and you're not alone 🙏 It's easy to justify overworking when you love your work or live in an area where COL is high. At the same time, your output can't exceed input - how you're investing in your health and quality of life. I've learned this the hard way!
Is it a successful career if it doesn’t let you have a life?
I'm in the same boat. I average similar hours sometimes more at my company too. I don't want to get tired of marketing but the long days are beginning to feel like they're adding up 😩
Your company will always take as many hours as you'll give it. Set boundaries, talk to your manager about your bandwidth, and demand more for yourself. :) You deserve a life and a role that doesn't drain your life! Worse comes to worse - work for a big company like Capital One. They care so much about employee happiness you can get away with murder. 😂
You might find it helpful to keep a log of how you spend your time for a month and then look at the things that are sucking up your time.
Meetings and email are the biggest time sucks for me. One of my problems is the lack of priorities in the organization creates a space where everyone thinks they can request anything from marketing and everyone thinks marketing should meet with them regularly and give constant updates about their requests.
I would also encourage you to just sign off at 5 pm every day and see what happens. Does anyone really get mad their thing took a few days longer than expected? If it takes you a little longer to get to someone's request, is anything really jeopardized?
Yes, agreed. We us a task tracking software at our agency. So, it shows how much time I spend on each client, on admin tasks and even in meetings.
It makes me feel less guilty leaving work at a reasonable time when I can see I work 45 hours with 70% billable time.
You can set boundaries and create a very rewarding life for yourself outside of work. It takes effort. It’s not an easy task. When you start drawing the lines you will be amazing and so free. But I have to work at it every single dang day.
