Is there a difference between attorney and counsel titles when you’re in-house? Do some companies use one over the other?

Titles are all over the place. The first company I worked for assistant counsel was the most junior now I’m at a place where it’s fairly senior. There isn’t uniformity and I think that’s well known in-house.

Fact! Fresh out of lawschool, I was the only other attorney in-house besides the GC and my title was Associate General Counsel. lol

Titles are going to vary between companies.

Ours is:
Corporate counsel (less than 10 years of practice)

Senior counsel (at least 10 years of practice)

Assistant general counsel

Associate general counsel (typically leads a practice area)

Deputy GC (not quite second in command, as. I AGCs report through this person)

GC

Ours is the same, except that Associate GCs are under Assistant GCs.

Ours is just “counsel” across the board until you become GC of a business unit. Some people are not fans of this but it’s intended to remove a sense of hierarchy and in that sense it works. I previously worked at a company where every year or so you got some BS fluffy title and people really bought into it, like “I’m a senior VP deputy now so don’t put time on my calendar unless you have good reason.” Meanwhile they’re like 4 years out of law school.

I’ve noticed that companies either use (a) counsel/corporate counsel/senior counsel/commercial counsel, etc or (b) assistant general counsel/associate general counsel/deputy general counsel/gc. I had colleagues at my former firm tell me that the latter are better titles.

Titles are worthless IMO. It's a "feel good" thing for most folks.

Titles seem to be different for the same role depending on the company. The only pattern I have noticed is the larger the company the more they “need” “managers” so there’s more titles and sometimes it’s just an excuse to raise someone’s salary / benefits pkg. So their title changes with little else.

In-house with a Canadian provincial government. Here’s our food chain:

Legal Officer (Levels 1-3 depending on seniority)
Director
Executive Director
Assistant Deputy Minister
Deputy Minister

The DM reports to the Minister who is an elected official and member of Cabinet.

Hi Guys, I came on a previsit and joined and then returned back to my Home Town but while signing the contract i saw that if you leave the company withing 2 year you have to pay entire relocation cost back.

1. My initial offer letter didnt have these clause mentioned.
2. Is Pre-Visit considered as a part of relocation, I came because they denied virtual onboarding .

Now my question i didnt take relocation package i was forced to come for onboarding.

So I work as a freelancer for an agency. And I have another client outside of that agency. I work between figma files and sometimes use components across files but change and redesign them to fit the project. My manager in the agency was able to "go to main component" and see my other client's project which included some of the agency's icons (they downloaded them online) and some basic tabs and drop shadows components. I feel busted but I shouldn't but can't get over the embarrassment.

Just curious, for others who transitioned in house from a firm, when did you fully realize/appreciate the benefits of your transition? I moved about six months ago and it’s taken some time to adjust, but I think I’m finally getting there. I have to laugh at how “busy” everyone claims to be all the time, clearly no where near law firm levels of busy. Just wondering what the light bulb moment was for others to think “yup, this is what I’d always been looking for.”

I’m in a potentially great situation but it’s new to me. I’m in the interview process for 2 companies, first I am waiting for an offer, the other knows about my other interview and is streamlining the process to get me through. I’m top 2 candidates for each according to the recruiters I am working with. If I get an offer before I finish interviewing with the second, how do I delay accepting the offer? Both will be relatively equal pay, good companies, WLB, etc. I know the bird in hand saying…

Does anyone else’s company do “secondments”? I was asked to “look into” this? Someone who is a non attorney executive had a great idea they could save money and have outside counsel “at their disposal” 24/7 and on-site? Is that how this works? I know we spend a lot of $ on outside counsel but I don’t see how one of them having an office on-site adds much value? Maybe it’s a good thing. I am supposed to “report back.” Are they a joint employee? I was asked to advise “what this will look like.”
