Is there a flex culture in nyc or is there that much money to be made here? Over the past week of moving here, I’ve met 1) a second year investment banker driving a brand new Porsche Panamera, and 2) a third year forensic accountant decked out with designer clothes driving a Tesla Model X. I understand they technically can afford it but don’t they save? I’m from West LA where people are rich but more lowkey so this is kinda a culture shock.

1) yes there’s a lot of $ to be made here 2) kids in finance go all out knowing their first year salary puts them at the top 5-10% income in the country, fresh out of grad. I went a bit crazy in my first year too. The effect is more intense if you’re from a humble upbringing. Then I started to save more 3) I’m surprised LA doesn’t flex as much as NYC. “NYC is for rich people who hate themselves and LA is for rich people who are obsessed with themselves”

I lived in LA for five years and have been in NYC for 10. This culture absolutely does exist in LA — it just depends on who you surround yourself with. My ex’s family was all about what car you drove and what restaurants you went to. None of my friends in NY are like this.

Because contrary to popular belief, women do actually hook up with you if you have these things. If it didn’t work men wouldn’t do it

People with attitude and perspective are definitely attracting the wrong type of woman...and are most definitely not that great themselves.

This is a lie. I would say a 35 million dollar yacht or $25 million penthouse is pretty loud

If you ci.r to Sydney you will have people driving porches and high end beamers/Audi like they are Toyota corolla on sale, and barely working. Most if it is inhereted wealth tbh. Ppl will say otherwise but no sane person who just got a job will spend that much until they already have it of savings and investments.

Lol maybe I’m hanging out with the wrong people but I haven’t really noticed any of these things in nyc

There is both a lot of money being made and those who come from money from all across the world coming here to spend time in one of the world’s greatest cities.

No. Lots of people here live beyond their means. Be frugal and focus on the right things.

Lots of people have insane trust funds in NYC too.

Who are all these people you know actually buying and driving cars in nyc?

My friend is a big golfer and he joined a country club outside the city during covid so having a car is a big convenience

I think places like Miami flex way more. Here there are just a sea of front doors. Some hide super rich, some hide mega poor.

They really can’t afford it...yet. It’s probably family money. Give it 5-6 years in IB and they’ll be able to if they really want to flex and not save much at all

Do you live in FiDi? Might explain the types of people you see. As you venture out to other neighborhoods, you’ll find that not everyone is like that and you’ll find a culture that resonates with you.

Yes.

Pretty much everybody here has a massive trust fund and tons of family money even though they may not talk about it

*phew* glad I’m not the only One

Is MBB (mostly thinking about McKinsey) really that bad in terms of WLB? I feel like people tend to exaggerate things sometimes - i was told i'd be working approximately 65h at Deloitte in Tech Strategy and honestly that barely ever happened. I wasn't considering switching since I love my job and my team, but many people are telling me I shouldn't "waste" my potential at Deloitte (whatever that means...). They kind of got to me and now i'm looking for more info about the culture/work at MBB.
