As far as I know very few advertising gigs have any semblance of work life balance
From what I’ve seen, the dream is probably that you Found a successful agency and sell it - remaining as a decently paid figurehead til you retire early. Naturally requiring burn out level investment to get there, then chilling out later.
The risk of coasting at a non director level is you’re going to be expensive and eventually not young. Prime cutting territory. So you’d need to have safety backup.
I went in-house. My life drastically improved, immediately.
Same for me as a SPM. 9-5. Once you land one it’s easy to land others. Even if it’s freelance first.
I think I found it now… Working for an amazing agency that’s 100% remote and still picking up side consulting jobs that are fun on fun brands. I think it’s about finding the right agency with the right people and remote helps especially since I have children/teenagers.
Freelancing when the economy is good
Work hard in a major metro area, then apply to be a cd at a decent small agency in a secondary or tertiary market. Done.
Rising Star

The fun stuff was the early days. When it seemed full of possibilities. But after 20-30 years you’ve seen first hand the minuscule percentage of good ideas that actually get made, and you realize the truth of the industry.
Did sysophus ever have fun?
lol that will never happen. It’s only going to get worse with AI and shrinking margins. The hamster wheel willl get faster and maybe even have spikes on it. Get. Out. (If you can).
