Is there a way to avoid giving a recruiter your expected salary range and have them make the first offer?

I’ve never been able to get them to give me a salary range. I usually just give them a much higher number. I’m sure Director 1 knows what they’re talking about, but I’ve never been nope’d by giving a high number. Some recruiter once told me “that’s what we pay our managers” (applying to Sr Con) and then I proceeded to get interviews after anyways. I can’t tell you how that story ends bc they froze hiring due to COVID

like

Ask what is the range for this position so I can see if it aligns with my expectations.

like

Just be firm in asking them what the range for this role is to make sure it aligns with your expectations. They’ll probably push back and ask what your expectations are though so be a good consultant and guide the conversation

like

If they really don't want to give their range, give them a range that's 30% higher than what you actually would need to leave.

Example:
Current salary: $100k
Salary that would make you switch: $130k
Salary range you tell recruiter: $165-175k

like

Hmmm I guess from my experience, if the role was between $120-$140, giving them a number of $160-$170 wouldn't completely lock you out? I've been told "that's a bit too high, out higher range is $XX"

like

When the recruiter asks my desired salary in the screen, I always turn it around and say that I'm pretty flexible based on the duties/responsibilities of the role and then ask what range they had in mind for the position.

I've interviewed a LOT over the past ~15 years and that response has worked for me probably 80%+ of the time and they've responded with a range.

If they refuse to give a range, then based on my research of the salary range for the position (through looking at Glassdoor and the like, talking to anyone I might know at the firm, etc), I'll give them a target range that's at the top of the range I'm looking for in their comp band that I've been able to find; e.g. if my research shows the comp band going from, say, $150-180k, I'll ask for $175-185k.

Have this conversation over the phone instead of by email. Give a high number and gauge their reaction. They will either say that your request is reasonable, or that it is high for whatever reason. If they say it is high, ask for their range. If they don't give a range/number, say "let's continue anyway, as I may be flexible depending on...". If they give a range and it is decent, keep moving forward.

I say “$xxx, xxx is what people at my level are coming in at, I would expect something competitive with that” or something if they really push.

Looking for some advice on a couple of offers I have.

The first offer is for an Account Executive position at a smaller company with a base of $50k and another $20k in OTE.

The second offer is for a BDR position at a larger and faster growing company with a base of $60k and another $20k in OTE. Also some stock options but they aren’t public yet.

I have 2 YOE as a BDR and think I could succeed in either position. Both have hybrid work set ups. Any thoughts or advice is appreciated! Thanks.

In need of some advice… feeling very discouraged. I’m no. 2 in charge and my function and salary is that of a VP (I work for a brick and mortar ASC/physician practice, as well as a telemedicine company). However, we are a small org and don’t use titles like that. I’m trying to move forward and expand into larger healthcare organizations, however I feel I’m being rejected before my resume is even reviewed because of my job title. Any recommendations?
