Is there any benefit in going through a 3rd party recruiter for a specific job? I saw the job posting and was already thinking of applying and a rando recruiter messaged me about the same exact role

By applying to the job posting yourself, you could end up in a black hole of resumes and your resume never gets seen. The third party recruiter would be incentivized, through commission, to find good candidates who's resumes are reviewed by the hiring manager. Since the third party recruiter reached out to you, and not vice versa, I recommend going that route. Just my opinion.

Agree. Having someone advocate for you is always going to provide you with a better chance.

In some cases, the third party recruiter may be more transparent around compensation, given how their fee structures are typically designed

It’s all circumstantial...a gamble. It certainly doesn’t negatively impact your search; it should only help to use a 3rd party recruiter. That said, I’ve never used one and have successfully been able to get through interviews/offers through cold applying.
