Is there any feasible way to get a job in Europe or South America as a corporate lawyer with a JD from a US institution but no Big Law experience? I really want to get out of here but I’m not optimistic that it’s feasible

I’m right there with you. I get linked-in recruiters reaching out about international jobs all the time. But honestly have no idea if it would be worth it. Once Obergefell is reversed, I’ll be out of here. 🖐

I wish I had the “fight” in me honestly. But the cynical part of me thinks why stick around to help change a place that clearly doesn’t want to progress. At least not enough for me to feel comfortable and safe.

UK big law firms with branches in the US would hire you even without big law experience and still pay you US big law salary. I am an international without a JD and just an LLM, and that’s what most of my friends did. Got an LLM here, passed the NY bar and got jobs in UK big law firms as U.S. attorneys. And believe me, it’s hard for Nigerians with LLMs to get a big law job in the US without a JD, but that doesn’t seem to matter in the UK. I would think you’d have a better chance as the notion is that a U.S. JD lawyer would hardly want to move to the UK. You can reach out to your career services at your school about this or frankly just reach out to the recruiter of the firms directly via LinkedIn or email.

Im trying to get to NZ. Lawrence will be next to go. I think the the current “court” will buy into arguments about public “welfare and safety” and “morals,” and that there is no “explicit” right to engage in sodomy, and further it is not “deeply rooted in history and tradition.” They will cite medieval laws of men being castrated or drawn and quartered as justification for the change.

^ GB is on the same downhill slide with their extreme right cults.

Have you looked at Australia (I know you said Europe)? Common law JXD, does a lot of work with the US so your transactional skills and US knowledge could be valuable there?

I haven’t but I will! Thank you

I doubt it is impossible but it will be difficult. Maybe you can look at NGO’s that do work in those areas? If you are willing to expand your geographic area, I know US attorneys that do paralegal work in Grand Cayman and make more than many US attorneys. Good luck (and I get considering leaving the country).

Yes (I'm european) but it really helps to know the language. Most European countries use Civil rule as opposed to common law so a LLM also goes a long way.

I know numerous eDiscovery firms are looking for reviewers in other countries. I've seen a significant amount for the UK and EU, and I can't say I haven't thought about it...

It may be difficult but really depends on what you want to do. There are a lot of US-only qualified lawyers in international law firms outside of the US to sign off on US law matters - ie you only work on a restricted permit for US law matters. I have seen a lot of US lawyers in Asian countries like Japan/Korea (and they didn’t speak the local language), and a few in Europe as well.

You can try to pursue government work. Department of State has some jobs or try military related opportunities.

This would be a good idea but honestly I don’t want to be associated with the US in any way anymore

The Hague, Amsterdam.

Amsterdam pre covid had a lot of international companies. You can always look at Deloitte, EY, Kpmg, or some other more international based companies. If you have skills that are more transferable “internationally” per say (FCPA, compliance, etc) it’s probably easier.

It’s possible. My exp., however, is more people from common law backgrounds go Europe > US.

Your qualification is only one aspect. You need to find a firm willing to sponsor you should you not have the right to work. You also need to appreciate that going into big law here you’ll have to worry about annoying US tax obligations (if nothing else the requirement to report to the IRS) and—unless you’re in a jurisdiction with high state taxes—will instantly be paying marginal taxes at a higher rate than in the US (again, depending on where in Europe). Just things to think about.

That said, having come to Europe to practice law at a US firm, I massively prefer it and it’s not as big of a hurdle as people make it out to be.

like

Idk about Europe but almost every Latin country’s legal system is based on civil law (if not every one) so you’d probably have to homologue your degree and then have to study some more; unless you can find a law firm that’s looking for some sort of reverse LatAm associate and even then it would be difficult to practice as an attorney in said jurisdiction.

Yeah I have been mostly looking at European jobs and it seems like it would have to be with a large company or international firm in order to use my American law knowledge. It’s discouraging since I don’t have big law background and I get the sense those are the only kind of international jobs for America lawyers

What is your work experience on?

You could do commercial work in-house too.

Libs always say this and they never follow through lol

I have a classmate with no biglaw experience doing this now. They didn't need to receive additional training or anything before getting this offer.

What kind of role did they get? Do you know how they found it?

How many hours do other common law attorneys work/bill?

I believe Ireland has reciprocity with the State of New York. If you get/are licensed in New York you may be able to find work in Ireland.

I work for a midsize Regional law firm and am working on a deal with an AM50 firm on the other side. Normally when I work with larger firms their documents are pristine, but every document I’ve gotten from them (from several different attorneys) is sloppy. Typos, grammatical errors, confusing wording, etc. Anyone else experience this with certain “Big Law” firms? I’m just sort of shocked to keep getting documents from them that look like a 1st year drafted it without anyone reviewing it.
