Is there any firm size or practice area where you can make $500-700k/year (as a partner) and not work biglaw hours? I’m frustrated by my in-house earning potential but am also unwilling to work biglaw hours and don’t need the $1mm+/year payoff for biglaw partnership.

You can make that much as counsel at my firm (can do 80% so your billable requirement is in the 1500s).

What is the workaround?

OP do you have business? If not, stick to cities and firms where senior associates make >$300k. I am in Chicago, practiced at both small and midsize firms and none would pay you that much for those hours with no business. Maybe you can get that at Cravath scale firms in NYC.

This might sound like a crazy question but never having worked in public before: Billable hours - if you’re very efficient at your job, do you stretch out the time and work slower to get to your billable hours or do you safe the client the money. In a Situation where you don’t have other projects to work on. Tell me the ins and outs of working billable hours for a complete newbie.
