Is there any hope for the Republican Party on either coast? Vice versa for the Democrats in the interior and south? How does either party win outside their geographic market?

I think the arc of the moral universe bends toward justice (MLK quote?) but unsure when we will see it manifest, Democrat or Republican. From my vantage point, many Republicans are grinding heels to grind heels.

It really is!

I remember a time when the term RINO was being used as a social issue litmus test only, but now it’s any issue (economic, foreign policy, etc.). Unless you check every box, which I do not, it seems you are out of the party. Gone are the days of Reagan’s “big tent” republicanism and I fear there is no way back to the middle for either party.

Is there any hope for a viable 3rd party (not what is out there now)?

You would need electoral reform for that to happen. The US electoral system is designed for extreme parties to maintain power. Especially the electoral college, by far the biggest mockery of democracy in any "democratic" nation.

We aren’t a “democratic” nation. We are a representative republic. If we were a pure democracy, each citizen would vote for every piece of legislation. We elect our “representatives” so we don’t have to vote n every piece of legislation. Same concept as the electoral college. Your assumption that having direct election of the President would have better outcomes but I would argue that it would have unintended consequences that you can’t predict. You could end up with a plurality with no clear winner and longer election cycles. Tribalism could be even worse.

There are still lots of republicans in California. Republicans are still 30-40% of the state.

I don’t think so unless each party makes a massive shift. The parties are playing to who has always voted for them in hopes that maybe others will catch on. I think both parties need to start listening to the other side and realize that in a country of 300 million with so much space, and so many different ways of life, there cannot be extreme, only compromise. Neither side will get everything they want, but until the parties realize all anyone wants is to be heard and compromise, nothing will change.

Hmm interesting. I think I agree with the shift personally. I have definitely shifted myself, however I don’t think it will happen on a large scale. I think I still disagree on parties being extreme. I think both sides have gone extreme absolutely. I don’t think any party represents me. I am still a centrist, but I used to lean left of center and I just feel like I cannot get onboard with a lot of the big left talking points. However, I only barely lean right of center because I cannot get on board with trump either. It’s such an interesting time to think about these things.

I am due to take 2 weeks parental leave sometime in the next month and have an offer lined up. Is it better to tell the new place I would prefer to push my start date to take my leave and join two weeks after (accounting for 2 weeks of notice when I get back)? Would that be burning a bridge with current firm (taking leave and giving notice as soon as I am back)? I want to avoid losing 2 weeks of salary during that time if I can.

Hey Fb friends - need an advise. My current firm hasn’t stated my GC process yet and with current processing time it appears to be somewhere around 12-15 months time to get PERM approved. In addition my current firm needs leadership approval & they make me sign a reimbursement form in case I quit. On other hand, I have approved i40 from my ex-employer (Big4) who fired me last fall, I don’t know if they will hire me back. Since I am from India and the date of filing appears like going to be…cont.
