Is there any practical reason to learn VBA as an audit associate? Trying to decide if it's worth my time to learn.

All wrong. VBA and automating and standardizing workpapers is probably the primary reason I've become famous at my firm and likely a high contributor that got me to manager in 3.5 years.

like

As an audit associate, probably not. As a professional, absolutely.

like

Look for redundant tasks then automate those tasks with VBA. I've done it so much I've started doing operations consulting projects for my clients (I.e. not tax/audit related).

like

Tax is different than audit. I don't thunk it'd be useful to learn. You could ask people in your group if it would be useful? My guess is no.
Also, Mr 3.5yr manager, are you @ big 4? They're being incredibly lock step the last 3 years. This kind of stuff is less likely to get you noticed in larger firms (pwc) because there are usually dedicated teams (like my team at ey) that do all that stuff.

OP: if you want to stay with PwC, Google sheets can be a lot more powerful than Excel. I built a lot of complex regex formulas that Excel doesn't have baked-in, and when you get into complex linking, it can make you very valuable on teams. I left the firm and didn't focus on VBA, and now I kind of wish I had, as I don't have Google at my new gig. VBA will be useful regardless of the job you take, but it is just one tool - it is often a poor fit for the tasks people throw at it. Understand the different types of major languages and think holistically.

like

Depends if you want to stay in audit forever. Likely you'll never need VBA skills for audit. As a professional, however, this can be a powerful tool. If you ever want to move into a finance role or consulting role, it's something that would be useful to have on the resume and would help make you stand out. Purely speaking audit though, it's probably not necessary.

I'm going to guess tax technology and data analytics

like

Bro yes unless you're not Indian like me it's embedded in our DNA

No reason. Only useful as a staff/senior. Might get you noticed, though.

Tax is a different story than audit IMO. But do you have any experience with programming? If have background knowledge it'd be super quick to pick up, if not... Might not be worth it.

Little to no previous programming experience....

I work in a technology-oriented group, and I can't tell you how much easier it would make my life if our users understood some basics of VBA, named ranges, array formulas, etc. If nothing else, it will help you understand how macros work and hopefully prevent you from doing things that could break your tools.

@EY1 - what group are you in that's dedicated to this sort of thing?

Hi everybody! 😊
I've been working as a Junior Analog Design Engineer for a year and half.
I received a proposal for a Senior Analog Designer role from Bosch in the same city where I am currently working.
Should I wait and build up a few more years of experience before accepting a Senior role or should I jump in and work to fill the gap?
Next year, there will be an important deadline for the project I'm working on and my resignation could be critical for the team, how would you deal with it?

Random, but valid/persistent thought.

After 2 years of a pandemic and working independently for many years, I am not feeling interviews AT ALL. There are points in the interview where I want to just say "Look! Either hire me or don't".

How can I get over this feeling? I'm over the whole "stand in the line of fire to prove how good I am" bs. Any recommendations for getting over this or possible industries to pivot into to avoid bs interview processes and ghosting?
