Is there any sign that some firms might be open to 100% WFH after the pandemic? Really don't want to go back to the office.

Same! Wfh is so convenient and I’m more efficient when I don’t have to get ready and commute every day!

like

I would really love a hybrid arrangement. I kind of miss seeing people and interacting with other humans but I also love not having to get ready in the morning right when I wake up or wasting time commuting. I’d love to wfh 2-3 days a week.

like

I have never had a wfh arrangement anywhere. With the exception of having a late hearing or depo in another county or something and going home for the last couple hours of the day or like a one off for a furniture delivery. I’d even take 1-2 days! Just some flexibility would be nice!

The partners at my firm continue to talk about how it’s such a disadvantage to not be in the office to “talk about our cases.” If I need to talk to someone I can pick up a phone. Not to mention, even when we were in the office, most partners were seldom present, and the only time they came to talk to associates was to assign more work. 🙄🙄🙄🙄

likesmart

I actually missed the ability to drop by other people’s offices to chat about strategy, but I think that’s highly culture dependent. I talked to partners every day and it wasn’t always to assign more work—plus I would just say “no” if I had too much already lol. I know a lot of firms are NOT like that, but I definitely feel weirder calling someone when I used to be able to walk by their office and actually see if they were busy.

like

I think you’re going to see a shift where it’s going to be, go to court/Arb/depositions and then go home. Unless you have an office meeting or client meeting.

like

Haha. Bringing back memories of the Veuve Fridge at the Cravath conference center. I was an itty bitty legal assistant and we'd get to drink thevleftovers, even if it was 8am! Teehee.

funny

I have been seeing more and more recruiter emails with fully remote positions listed, I definitely think some firms will go that direction

like

I’m in corporate transactional law, so that might affect it—no need to go to court etc. I haven’t followed up with any of the recruiters because I’m happy where I am for now, but they advertise the positions as market rate BigLaw

My [very small] firm will not be renewing its lease when it expires in the spring, and will instead be renting a few offices in a co-working space. No expectation that folks will go into the office, but we wanted people to do have the ability to do so if they wanted.

WFH has been a nightmare w new associates. I can’t even imagine the crushing despair of starting a new career in which you come from school woefully unprepared without having the ability to have human connection. It’s easier to leave those newbies to their own despair. I on the other hand just started a month of WFH. ... work from Hawaii. WFH makes time away from the office much more relaxing.

likefunny

Just keep asking. No doubt there’s people who are overwhelmed and need help with work. Find them, talk to them and stay relevant. There’s a partner in my group who will consistently ask me “please find something for so and so to do on x matters” and although I may never talk to so and so, I literally always have something that needs to be done and that I’m behind on. Find this type of connector partner and stay in their ear and soon enough you’ll be busy

I guess my firm is a unicorn. We’ve been able to work from home pre-Covid. My boss would ditch the office if he could but state rules require it.

Pre-Covid support staff were required to work in the office every day and attorneys could do as they choose. Really nice flexibility.

like

Same here. I was full time wfh pre-COVID, so no change for me.

I’d say 70% of Biglaw is all about face time. Some trendier firms might move into full WFH but I wouldn’t bet money on it

like

This makes me extremely sad.

I had a hybrid arrangement pre covid because I live far from the office and so did some other folks, and I generally find it much easier to bill and be productive without wasting time commuting. Plus I see more of my son and drop him off in the morning, which I thought would just stress me out and give me a later start, but it didn’t. It had the exact opposite effect. I am in no hurry to go back and the productivity speaks for itself. I think it would be awesome if I could do this, and also go back to live deps, court appearances, etc. I do miss normalcy, but only the parts I liked about it.

I’ve been surprised at the number of clients who have gotten upset or outright angry that my firm is not doing in-person meetings right now. I shouldn’t be surprised though, the clients who want the most in person meetings are the ones who’s cases least require it......

My office has not gone remote despite a stay at home order here on So Cal. I think we're going to see some holdouts against working from home (like my boss). I just hope I can get the vaccine before catching the virus!

Hey FishBowl Friends, so I’m currently trying to break into tech sales/FinTech and I feel that due to my previous work history, I might not look like the ideal candidate on paper but I’m an extremely fast learner and very coachable. I’ve been a manger at a gym, got my degree in finance, worked as a client advisor at a top 3 auto dealer in the nation and now I’m a project manager at a solar company. I really want something that’s remote and steady, any recommendations on how to spruce myself up?

Hi folks, I had a quick question around remote work. My office is in San Francisco but I worked remotely from NJ for clients on the WC. How should I answer the question, “did you earn income working remotely by providing the services in a different state than the state you originally engaged employment with it”? If it matters, I never set foot in CA.

Hello, fellow newbie here 😀
Was wondering if yall know of any remote sales jobs with a good starting base salary? I'm doing great at my current role selling senior health insurance (76k give or take a year) but I know I'm capable of selling at a higher commission range. My calls at my last company were all cold (around 100 a day). I got job offers as a recruiter and also a few SDR offers but both fields the base is under 45k. I have a four year degree and one year of sales experience. Thank you
