What are your opinions about potential big4 layoffs in m&a tax? Campus hiring starting next year so I don’t have a good idea of what people are thinking at the firm. I know m&a is typically not where you want to be in a recession so I’m curious about job security starting next year. Any insights/opinions would be appreciated. EY PwC Deloitte KPMG
Thought on Real Estate tax at EY.
What is your point? Iol… life is more than just a job. My parents do laundry cleaning and serve old people, they make a pay check and invest in me. If they can do dirty job to put me in tax, I better like tax.. mental health and WLB? I had been there. You need to figure out how to pace yourself. There are pressure outside of tax. I think tax taught me a lot of life skills. Coming from a big 4 tax manager…
If one will fix the mindset they can't grow in life and in tax definately they cant, its a no brainer.
Yeah I'm happy in tax because I love what I do (corporate tax/ASC 740). At a previous firm, when I was forced to do 1040s I wanted to gouge my eyeballs out.
EY yeah thats the downside of this type of work but I like it so much that I deal with it
I’ve been in tax about 6 years. I’d say I’m not too happy. I don’t really like it but don’t know what else to do! It was good to start off with but now I feel I am not challenged enough (feel dumber than I used to be) and don’t feel my job is meaningful. I now find accounting to be such a bore and I’m not excited nor motivated to go to work. I go just because I have to.
Enthusiast
I exactly know what you are saying. 😐
I’m M&A tax and while the hours can be challenging It provides great comp and opportunities. I have ultimate in flexibility and an upwardly mobile career. Great teams, clients and transactions that are engaging. Come on over!
which tax specialty is that?
I actually really like the tax work I do for my clients. I left for a few years to industry (not in a tax role) and ended up going back to PA because I missed the adrenaline rush of tax. I feel like I have a knowledge that is helpful and sought after and my clients appreciate it.
I want to say pre pandemic I was content (wouldn’t say happy though). The last 1.5 years of crazy work hours and deteriorating mental health does have me questioning things tho. It‘a enough to pay the bills, but not enough to buy a house (at least in the bay) lol. for most people public accounting is a stepping stone. More people are just jumping to industry quicker for the subpar pay relative to the hours worked
Lol funny how most people on this thread that absolutely love their jobs are SM/Director/Partners. At that level, I’d hope you love your jobs…😂
I personally didn’t mind it, but the pay was not nearly enough for the amount of hours and work they wanted from me (we are severely understaffed). So I left for a role in Advisory (at least they pay well for the crazy amount of hours lol)
Counterpoint, perhaps it’s the people who enjoy the work, or have longer term aspirations, are the ones who can ride out the tough times (which will visit you regardless of where you work).
Yes, happy in tax since I got out of public, intl. 130k working 35-45 easy weeks. Might go up to 50 on the quarters. I only review maybe 10 forms a year, most of what I do is management and technical consulting to support business (m&a, transactions, etc.)
I do find the subject of tax interesting, provided me with a nice apartment and car
Really after leaving PA , no serious complaints
I also feel as if tax folks need to realize their exit options - family office, in house corporate, working for a fund in house, government, informational and regulatory reporting
I’m still in it because I’m too lazy to change and I like a good paycheck with relatively easy work. I know it’s not healthy because I really hate my job and the amount of time it takes of my life
I like what I do. I’m in AWM and preparing k-1s isn’t all that, but when there’s a new fund or a new client, it’s interesting to listen to calls with the partner and the client and learn how it all works.
The hours though…. 😰
Yes, even with the last couple years being tough I’m happy. I enjoy my work and coworkers, and my WLB by PA standards is pretty good.
I'm happy, but I feel like my firm leans more into work life balance, almost to much. A job is a job. Figure out what kind of puzzles you like to solve, I like tax compliance.
I don’t think anyone is in tax because they love working with tax forms. For most people it’s something they’re enough good at and its a decent paycheck. And sure yes people in public are underpaid, but 55k+ out of college with benefits in the scheme of things, there’s worse places to start out.
2x+ every 5 years.
There are many areas of tax. Sales and use, severance, excise, research, international, etc have pretty good WLB.
Yes? I really like the type of work that I do, and think I am very well paid to do it.
I love Tax! I am in SALT practicing in C&I and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. If you don’t want long hours than public accounting may not be for you.
I am happy in tax. Actually I’ve been the most happy I’ve ever been in any job and it’s been a second career for me. However, the long hours were not for me so I am on a part time assignment (which basically just means no overtime in busy season). I was being paid a very low salary since going part time though and thought I probably couldn’t go any place else as a part timer. Well that was not true… I got a killer offer for nearly double the money working the same part time hours recently. I honestly think the actual work is really interesting, but the busy season hours are just not sustainable for most people.
