Is there supposed to be a process to determine if a project is a good fit? Feeling as though my firm regularly throws people onto engagements who have skillsets unrelated to what the role demands

Do you not think of yourself as a generalist? Even at more specialty aligned firms I expect an associate to be pretty fungible regardless of the project, core consulting skills (at the associate level) are the same, there’s something to be learned from every project

like

It's completely normal. If there is a staffing need you can fill, then you're going. As an Associate you are likely expected to test out a few things to grow your perspective and understanding of how all of this consulting world fits together. And you can make any experience support a case for promotion- you just have to tie the story together.

like

Depends. Filling different roles and needs as they arise is good. Getting staffed to projects with supportive teams though that teach new staff is the difference between learning or just getting frustrated/failing. Worst case new staff get thrown on staff aug projects, taking direction from the client with little support from PwC team leads who take the revenue. I have seen them all.

It’s a Saturday night! You’ll probably get better answers any other day / time of day

Ah makes sense. Not sure what firm you’re at, but usually there’s some sort of development team/career coach that guides you through these conversations. It might make sense to reach out to him/her for guidance

Happens all the time, these are called step up opportunities 😂

Completely normal in Consulting

What firm?

I see it as a great way to learn something new - it’s supposed to be a good thing as a consultant

I want to refer my fiancé for a position in my group (~60 people). They are more than qualified for the position and would be the same level as me. Assuming that we could be staffed on different projects, is there anything else to consider? Is this frowned upon from an integrity or ethical standpoint?

I’m currently on the bench and had a senior colleague reach out to me about assisting with a work item. I volunteered to help (but I can’t charge my time). There was (to my knowledge) an entire team of individuals working on the project up until last week so it seemed to me that my help wasn’t really needed. The project is spinning down and they’ve lessened the team members, but I’m still helping out with tasks. I don’t mind helping at all, but it seems weird. Am I thinking into this too much?

My in-laws think any woman or black person in a leadership position is there because of diversity and that companies shouldn’t try to put any effort into promoting diversity in their recruitment because it harms minorities as people will always think those minorities are in a position of power only because they were hired because of gender/race quotas. They also think it’s perfectly justified in prioritizing hiring a woman over a man (all else being equal) because of potential for ‘me too’. 😣

WL at Kellogg but $$$ at Booth. Just for my own self justification - are the two schools that different in culture and students profile? When I applied, I know there are differences but didn’t think it would be that much. I even think I have more chance at Kellogg than Booth. I know I’m lucky (only apply 2 for R1) and I’m grateful for Booth with scholarship. Congrats to all my Kellogg fellows today!

Does contributing to 401k beyond the match make sense? You can’t touch it until you’re 59.5. If i were to invest on my own in various etfs Ill pay the 22% tax upfront and then cap gains would be 15% when i sell. I’d have freedom to use that money to invest in real estate. when i pull my yearly salary out in retirement I’d Atleast be in the 22% bracket if not higher. Since the last 3 dem presidents have increased spending like crazy i expect massive tax hikes in the future. Am i wrong?
