Is this a superficial business where looks are very important to your career and how quickly it progresses? Can personality, talent and work ethic really compensate for the negative halo effect created by an ugly face? Do ugly people ever become leaders in this business (recently)?

Are you.... asking if our bosses are hot?

I think looks impact everything a little bit - beauty privilege and thin privilege are real. It's no guarantee of success, but it's one less barrier to people "liking" you for a job. The biases that come with ugliness - sloppy, lazy, disorganized, don't try hard enough - can impact peoples decisions to hire and promote, even when they're not true of a specific individual.

I’ve had a few BILFs for sure. I’ve also had a few Slothfaced Scaries. Looks help, but talent, charisma, and attitude go farther.

It’s a superficial world where looks are a definite factor to just about every social relationship and how quickly / positively it progresses.

Shrug-*

Definitely more for women than men, as in most scenarios. But if you are a creative, having a “quirky” look gains points. So take the “ugly” and make it original.

It's a superficial world, being hot always helps. That said people tend to care more about how much money you're making them, so I'd focus on that.

I meant the bosses care more what you do for the company's bottom line than what you look like.

🙄

If you’re gorgeous and you suck at your job, you probably ain’t gonna make it.

How many big name hotties can you think of, hahaha?Jeff Goodby and David Droga aren't exactly lifted from GQ. Who is that you're secretly admiring, OP? Anselmo Ramos? Greg Hahn? 😅

True. Just saying that for a creative, the work is easy to see and judge. Other departments, HR only has to go off of references that were handpicked by the person interviewing and a slight glimpse into their personality in the interview.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I’ve worked with some really ugly people in this industry. Unattractive inside and out. You can definitely make it if you’re hard-working, talented, driven, even if you happen to be hideous.

Hi everyone. I am having a rough time with morale at my company. The issues can be traced back directly to senior leadership, and I have rolled up the feedback and issues time and time again. I am no longer sure what to tell employees who come to me for help. We just launched an engagement survey (my last ditch effort to get senior leaders to LISTEN). Any advice on how best to coach employees through this if I am losing hope that things will change?

I’m mid-level in my HR career at my current company and an upcoming Master’s graduate. Studying for my SHRM-CP too. How did you make the transition to that next level?
