I don't think anyone is scared. But what it sounds like when someone says that is that they're really not that great at either.
I can't speak to the question directly but I can speak to the impracticality of trying to do both yourself. The real value is having a creative partner, if you both are ambi-creatives and the work is getting done I can't imagine places would complain if the work was good.
If an agency is hiring a CW, they want a CW. Ditto for AD. So, market yourself as one of those with strong crossover skills.
ACD1 are you saying you’ve never met someone who can do both well?
Once you get to an ACD level and up you need to be able to DO both. And critique and give feedback on both. But you still come from one field or the other. They're completely different ways of thinking. I'm better at spelling and grammar than most CWs I've worked with. But that does not make me a better writer. I still rely on the CWs that report to me for their craft.
Anyone who thinks they're equally good at both is either arrogant and delusional, or just not that good at both. But my all means, try and market yourself as ambi-creative if that's what you feel passionate about. I wish you the best of luck.
Not necessarily talking about doing both. I.e. as a CD.
Or working with another creative who feels the same.
Agree with most of this. If you can do both extremely well do both, but it’s rare. People who say they’re great at both are usually mediocre at both. That being said, by the time you’re a CD, you’re expected to be great at both.
