yeah, nothing makes people want to travel internationally like a contagion. and the only flights canceled are to china.
if your destination is warm, it’s more expensive to fly there this time of year. also, it’s pretty short notice.
If you’re booking tickets for travel between Feb13 and 18, expensive tickets are expected because of valentine day and president day long weekend.
Don’t forget spring break at college to any warm location
@SR1 not entirely the case. The insane amount of flight cancellations also totally hamstrings the movement of planes on long haul routes that may otherwise be 5th freedom flights. Depends on what the airline decides to do. They also have to plug that revenue hole in the books and may look to raise prices short term on more popular routes. Not saying you are wrong, just saying it is more complicated than that.
BCG1 good points and also thank you for the condescending remark on economics. My only bone to pick is minor; of course an airline can help mitigate loss by raising prices of tickets. It’s a trick as old as time in the airline industry *as long as demand stays generally the same.* Just peep the overseas carriers that hit the wet lease market when maxx happened. They quite literally raised prices to pay for their less efficient aircraft that took over the routes. To counter myself, if demand edges off even slightly then I totally agree it would not help.
Where are you trying to go and when? Europe flights are quite inexpensive at the moment, as are flights to some parts of Asia. South America and the Caribbean can be a mixed bag. It’s low season for domestic US too. Also depends how far before departure you’re booking (ex-US, many discount fares still have 7-, 14-, or 21-day advance purchase requirements) and whether you’re booking for a holiday weekend, school vacation, or when some sort of event is going on. If you’re trying to go to Europe, try Google Flights and entering “Europe,” rather than a specific city, as your destination. Flights to Barcelona, for example, are running $200-300 roundtrip from many US cities, while flight to Vienna are >$1000 roundtrip. You could buy a ticket for a cheaper city pair then get a separate intra-Europe ticket on an LCC like Wizz, Ryanair, easyJet.
It’s actually a business trip I’m needing to make to India in 2 weeks. Finding flights are a good bit more than my colleagues comparable trip a couple weeks ago. But it may also just be that he knew about his trip much earlier and was able to book sooner, not sure
Yeah Jan/feb is a popular time to go to india because the tickets are cheaper but if you buy 2 weeks ahead then it’ll probably be pricier regardless.
India flights are a mess because several key airlines (Cathay pacific, United) would typically transit Hong Kong or Shanghai from the USA to India if going from Chicago or the west coast. Those flights have been pulled out of the system, creating limited transit points in London, Middle East, Germany or Singapore
