It is certainly less important to me these days. However I think this is a healthier view on life.

This is certainly true, there is also less payoff for ambition and taking initiative due to reduced pay hikes, promotions, bonuses and exit opportunities.
I am not sure whether this is a good thing though at least for individuals early in their career, who are losing out on developing strong work habits and the tools to do well in and outside the workplace.
A one size fits all approach is not appropriate for the pandemic and what works for young parents and mid career professionals doesnt work for young and early career or the old & late career.
Its time to start rethinking our workplace to bring back the feeling of community/teamwork, initiative and mentorship in a safe & sustainable manner. And no — this doesn’t come at the expense of work life balance or involve bringing everyone back to the office at once.
If anything I personally am overwhelmed because I have too much work and am trying not to burn out the team. I suspect many Ms and SMs are in a similar boat.
I’ve been clocking ridiculous hours for the past several months. I’ve also been doing a significant amount of work that I would otherwise pass off to junior folks so they aren’t burning the midnight oil constantly.
Too many projects and not enough staff right now isn’t making your M/SMs life any easier. I’d say the same for the partners as well based on recent conversations.

In my 20+ year career I’ve found ambition comes and goes in waves. It’s certainly ebbed in the last few months. I’m getting my job done and think I’m leading my practice through a hard period. This isn’t the year I envisioned but I’m proud of what my team has accomplished.
But I’m not in goal crushing mode. The mental and emotional energy isn’t there for that. I’ve left a lot of BS initiatives and make work projects on my desk back at the office the last 7 months. They’ll probably get pushed into the trash the next time I go in. With fewer people and working remotely I’m more focused on keeping the team together and boosting morale than growth or getting to the next level.
I’m also spending more time with my family.
Doesn’t mean I won’t get back to a more ambitious state down the road. But applying a 2019 mentality to 2020 is asinine.
Then again most of what I see on LinkedIn in asinine.
I was always the reluctant consultant who gave up on the rate race years ago. This year has validated all my theories about life being short, family is more important and consulting is mostly a scam. Don’t get me wrong, I like the job and pay and even my bosses but in the end, it is not all that it is made out to be.
I wish single and childfree people got more consideration. It seems like there's such a focus on improving outcomes for parents but then we are the ones that work lonely 17 hour days at our kitchen table without the business travel, face to face, other interactions etc. Being a parent might require more effort but being single is dangerously depressive in these times
I don’t have anything to add here but I wanted to say thank you for keeping the messages positive here! I have seen too many cases of posts like this that have no ill intent being perceived as a “I have it worse” battle which is not necessarily. The recognition in this thread that everyone is having a tougher go in different ways is appreciated.
OP, thanks for sharing this
Many parents, including possibly yours, sacrificed a lot more for their kids. Food, shelter, sometimes even life. Nobody asked them to, it is universal, sort of biological. Having this perspective might help.
Sure K2, my hope and prayers for all of us. We will build better relationships and come out stronger after this pandemic 🙏
