South of Market is all relatively sketchy because of the prevalence of homeless people and drug dealing. But it really depends on your comfort level in a city.
Most homeless people won't bother you and drug dealers are generally harmless (if you aren't interested in buying, they aren't interested in you).
The issue you run into is, if you look vulnerable, people may bother you. And it's definitely harder for women. Robberies happen in the daytime and nighttime and can be violent.
The Richmond and Sunset are both full of families and far enough away from the city center that there's not a lot of crime and you can safely walk around day or night. Generally the further you get away from the Tenderloin and the Mission, the safer you will feel.

Disagree that "South of Market is all" relatively sketchy, depending on exactly where you mean. The areas north/east of 4th or 5th street have a lot of tourists and shoppers, and business/conference people during the week. This lively environment feels very safe. The four homeless people you will see are outnumbered many times over by the hundreds or thousands of other people.
Of course, as you venture to the part of Soma south of Civic Center, the story is quite different.
You really need to visit and check it out. I lived in the Tenderloin for a year because that was the only place I could afford a decent studio. Overall it was fine, just sketchy.

Can you define "safe" for us? What kind of commentary are you looking for that you couldn't find by googling "sf crime map"?

Ok, so it sounds like you're moreso looking for how the place feels rather than crime statistics.
I would stick to the Valencia street (west) side of your circle, or near the Target near the east side of the circle.
I didn't feel unsafe when walking through in the circled area, but it can feel deserted because of the relative lack of normal foot traffic. The Valencia and Target vicinities have nore foot traffic and feel better.
If you are in the area, walk thrrough and see for yourself.
I previously lived in 1550 mission & it was fine. Just have to be mindful of homeless sometimes but did not feel unsafe

I know to avoid Civic Center but wondering what that looks like on the map.
These are all seedy spots to live
I would not live there…
Safe is relative in the City.
