Is transitioning from a mid tier firm (such as RSM or GT or BDO) to Big 4 really as difficult as everyone says?

At senior level, not really

If you are highly ranked at mid-tier, you will do well. I did it, zero issues… went right into being highly ranked at big 4. If you have so so ratings at mid-tier, could be quite a bit more difficult lol

Imo best to move as a Senior or new Manager

Looking at GT's alumni from my office, most of the folks who left for B4 are all still there (4+ years) and almost all have been promoted at least once.

What about the other way around - B4 to mid-tier at an SM level?

In my office, we also have those individuals. They also stuck around (10+ years) and are now at the PPMD level. Our office in particular has a lot of ex-PwC and formely ex-Anderson (before they started to retire). The former local office tax practice leader was a PwC Director and a lot of ex-PwC folks had connections to her a long time ago.

Depends on the group, but it can be. At Manager and up level I find it a crapshoot if those hires pan out. The good ones are really good, the bad are gone within a year.

like

Just depends on the people in your new group. It’s all the same game. At some level, you have to be objectively good at the job. Past that, it’s all subjective and how well you can pivot.

No, went BDO to EY, same stuff

Is this an endless cycle where leaders don’t want to pay staff/seniors enough since they aren’t producing like previous staff/seniors. Staff/seniors aren’t producing as much as before since there isn’t enough staff/seniors to produce AND train effectively. Staff/seniors don’t stay because they want more money for the amount of hours they work compared to other jobs/careers. Thoughts?
