It lets you pick premium economy seats and check in bags for free. If these are important to you and you expect to travel more than a handful times next year, then Silver helps
But if you are only making that 900/1100$ trip to make status, then save the money and use it for these features as/when needed

No you cannot pick Premium Plus seats but you get Economy Plus at check-in which is far from premium economy

Lol no
Depends on your situation.
I literally just changed a personal travel flight on the phone and it was supposed to be a 215 dollar charge for flight plus change fee. They just said “thanks for being premier silver” and called it an even exchange so it was free 🥳
That’s a nice surprise.

Personally yes. Free same-day change is the best perk. You can book a cheap Wednesday flight and change it to friday for free.
And there are economy plus at checkin, upgrades to first class (I've gotten upgraded 30/58 flights this year), group 2 boarding, premier desk phone line etc

Non hub-to-hub flights or short-hauls. I do fly a lot of redeyes, middays or on tue/wed but it has gotten substantially difficult recently. I've gotten upgraded on longer hauls like LAX/SFO/LAS/PHX/ASE-ORD as well.
Earlier this year ORD-EWR was easy especially on 77W/intl 772 but no longer because those are being assigned to international routes.
Similar question but for Platinum. I need 300 PQP which is like one flight from ATL to IAH or something

Well you get 40 plus points and that is easily worth $300
