Is unlimited PTO a curse or a blessing!

Yeah I agree with P1, and clearly it’s the unpopular view here, but I think it depends on the company. Where I work it means we all take off way more than we would be able at just about any other firm, it’s encouraged, not limited or restricted. It’s great because it actually is unlimited. What I would say is most of the people on this thread don’t have unlimited PTO, their company just says they do. If you actually have unlimited PTO- it’s great.

likeuplifting

Isnt there an easy fix?

Roll out unlimited PTO *with* a minimum (say, 3-4 weeks). That minimum works the way « normal » vacation works - ie you have to use it or else the company pays it back to you. The rest is icing on the cake for those who wish / need to take advantage of it.

likefunny

Yeah sorry if my sarcasm didn’t exactly come through earlier but my comment was centered around leadership’s perspective on unlimited vs. accrued PTO. I think OPs solution of having unlimited PTO above and beyond minimum mandates/accruals is a great idea, was just saying that would never happen at EY bc it would counteract the main reason we switched to unlimited PTO in the first place 😉

‘Scam’ of the century

like

Scam :)

like

Just in case you didn’t hear the others say it - scam!

Scam. 1. Reduces companies PTO liability, 2. studies show less people take PTO when it’s ‘unlimited’ because they don’t feel like they earned it like when it accumulates.

like

My husband worked for one of those companies and if you are actually taking a lot of PTO, your utilization goes down which affects your promotion/raise status. I think it’s more applicable for companies in the commercial sector than federal.

like

It’s a scam, until they explicitly call out a minimum mandatory period of PTO that everyone has to take in a year. If companies are so concerned about well-being of their employees, it’s not hard to enforce minimum PTO period.

like

It’s not a scam if you take your time off. The fallacy about SM not allowing you to take time is often because you don’t plan. Book your vacation and plan then they can’t say no.

likefunny

C4 I’ve been in that position and got the time simply by saying, “I need tomorrow off, and here’s how it will impact what I have on my plate (X was delegated to this person, Y is still on track for its due date, I’ve rescheduled Z to this date).”

like

So which consulting firm created the unlimitied pto scam? Really does feel like the idea of a consulting company to save a business money .

I love the quote, “eliminates entitlement mentality”. How dare people feel entitled to their earned vacation?

Curse. Affects your utilization. Just another metric to justify your performance and departure from firm if things go south, again.

like

Unlimited PTO and still having utilization metrics to meet? No thank you.

like

Agreed. Doing away with utilization as a performance metric is a whole culture shift that Deloitte is (unfortunately) still not ready for.

We have ‘unlimited / discretionary vacation days’ but there is also a ‘guidance’ of how many you should take. I think it’s a bad policy if there is no corresponding ‘minimum days’ people should take off. While leadership is encouraging folks to take days off, it feels hard to request extended time off ‘beyond the guidance’

We had this at Navigant for Directors and above initially. And that made sense to me- their compensation and bonus are not tied to utilization targets. Then they converted it to Managing Consultant and above, talking about how great it is to provide that extra flexibility.

Then they sold us to a private equity firm. So clearly this was not about affording us greater flexibility, but a way to improve our financials.

Unless vacation time is removed from utilization formulas, it is simply scandalous IMO to not attach a monetary value to it. There's no reason why 80 hours of vacation annually can't be removed from calculating utilization targets.

like

Don’t be entitled to your vacation.

We are attempting to repeal all that nonsense.

Depends on the firm.

Why is it a scam? Is there any sort of proof to validate?

like

if 90% take less PTO, is that on the employees, or the firm? besides, not taking PTO and expecting a payout when exiting the firm is on the employee, as well. It's ok to save PTO hoping to cash out, but if it's not meant to be that way, why complain?

funny

It is what you make it

Scam. K so I know pwc 1) has accrued/capped vacation hours, and 2) PTO doesn’t factor into utilization. What about other firms?

I asked 3 of my higher ups to write me letters of recommendation a month ago when I put in my resignation. I went on PTO for a couple weeks & followed up with my manager today. He told me “actually I was told we aren’t allowed to write them for you. Sorry.”

I asked why and he just shrugged and continued the conversation...

Has anyone heard of anything like this? Bosses “not being allowed” to write LORs for exiting employees? I’m leaving on my own terms & good standing.

I had 60 day late payment of 35 bucks in Jan. It was new Amex Hilton card I opened for stupid points. It was reported and my credit score had been consistently dropping from last 6 months. It was 780 and now is 735. I realized this 3 months and been paying my credit card bills immediately. Infact I have overpaid each card to have negative balance so my credit utilization is almost zero. What else I can do to repair the damage. How much should I charge a friend to watch 4 dogs at their home over Christmas weekend (2 nights)? The dogs don't have any special needs or medications. I've dog sat for other people in the past but always for free. I also have had dogs of my own for most of my life. I want to start charging people for my services but also want to be reasonable since this is a friend and don't plan to charge a holiday fee. We live in St. Louis. Would $40 per day/night be reasonable?

So it’s EOY bonus time, and I got a barely middling raise and no bonus. It was a rough year health wise where I took a bunch of time off so I get it on paper, but I’m understandably disappointed. Conveyed over email. How on earth do I respond? “Thank you”? “Much appreciated”? Say nothing? At least last year was a phone call so I didn’t have time to stress about a response and probably just stammered out something nice. Thanks, and hope everyone else’s raises and bonuses are nicer!

Radisson is merging into Choice hotels, what usually happens to points in these circumstances? The email I got from Radisson basically said for now the points would only work at Radissons.

There are a couple decent Choice hotels in an area we vacation annually so ideally I'd hold on to the points until I can use them there but hoping I don't get a fraction of the current value.

The higher up I get at PwC the more I see wayyyyy too many cooks in the kitchen. Everyone is trying to add value lol it’s laughable. How do you navigate the holidays, with or without kids? I tend to be pretty busy over the next 3-4 months and I always try to make as much time for family as I can, but it seems like it's never enough. My mother in law is pretty old fashioned and I can tell she thinks it's wrong that some nights I'm home late during the holiday season or when I work in downtimes during family holidays. My partner is incredibly supportive but I still feel some guilt over it.

What is an expected utilization by fiscal year end? I’m possibly up for a promotion but my utilization is at 88% as an A2. It’ll get higher in the next couple of months, but what’s a good target?

I may be reading too much into this so tell me if you think so. I'm the only woman on a product management team for a smallish company. We're having a holiday party next Tuesday night, and my boss randomly asked me if I could bring some festive stuff to spruce up the venue. Flowers, lights, etc. It's not a big deal, but I am a little miffed that it was delegated to me since I am the only woman on the team. I'm not an assistant!
