Is wlb for consulting in UK (London) better than that in US? Trying to convince myself that the pay parity is worth it. Also, could you please help me understand whether the total long term col (inc healthcare, childcare etc) in London is less than that in a hcol US city (say NYC), and thus the saving potential is similar? TIA!

I'm sure it varies by team, but my experience is ABSOLUTELY! The difference will probably be more pronounced for B4 than MBB/T2 type firms. I was a strategy consultant at T2 London office, and whenever I worked with Americans, they were always working longer hours. But friends at B4 almost seemed to be on 40 hour weeks.

I worked for B4 in both London and Washington DC. And pay in the US is way way more than in the UK. I am paid 163k USD as Senior Consultant plus 26k bonus. Whereas in London office of D, managers are usually around 80-100k. Healthcare costs are much higher in us but overall cost of living I think is higher in London. Work pressure might be marginally higher in us but not by much and likely shouldn't be a factor.

helpful

Might be driven by differences in experience or practice, but that's about the right ratio. $2/£1 is a rough indicator of salary differences for same job / YOE.

I’ve found CoL in NYC to be generally higher (e.g. groceries) with much bigger variability on your biggest expense (rent) depending on where you live. Meaning, you could save significantly more than in London in NYC if you chose to live further from Manhattan.

helpful

I far prefer living in London, but if we’re being fair (ignoring cost) the US has better grocery stores.

Thanks a lot for the replies. Seems like the saving potential in the US(even hcol cities) is more than that in London. What do you think could be the reason behind such pay parity?

It’s the cost of labor not the cost of living. Firms are able to source quality talent more cheaply in the UK. Cost of living isn’t the driver.
