Sounds like this isn’t for you

If your mindset is “no way I’m working 70+ hours a week”, this isn’t for you. 70 hours a week is lower end, and live deals can be more like 90. And if you’re not grinding all day and have some downtime, will still have to manage emails / process stuff late into the night / during weekends so it’s not like you can ever unplug.
Yes I understand some banks / groups are different (I’m speaking from an m&a perspective at a smaller boutique) but I think if you’re in IB the expectation should be pretty bad WLB
management consulting is an adult day care job and no one can convince me otherwise
Lol
It’s not an experienced hire thing it’s an ib thing
Yeah I think you’d be happier not joining.. there’s def periods where it’s slow but if ur attitude off the bat is not wanting to work 70 which (in some cases is a good week) then it’s not gonna be a fit for sure
You should expect 70hr work weeks at all levels in IB.
Why do people do it then? The money is really that important to them?
forgot to mention this above but it’s also not just about yourself. providing for your kids, helping out your parents and extended family, etc.
Do investment bankers never spend time with their family or kids? At a certain seniority something has to give right?

It’s a matter of degree.
I wont be able to coach my kids as they age because I don’t have the ability to make myself available, without fail, on Tuesday at 5 PM.
But if you can’t participate in family things even while working 70-80 hours you’re not planning well.
Say I average 75 hours including travel/commuting. That’s 93 ‘other’ hours every week I have. I spend 19 hours training for triathlon at my peak. 49 sleeping. Leaving me with 25 hours over the course of the week to distribute. Do you really need more than 4 hours daily to devote to family/kids?
Do you have an offer lined up, or are you just thinking about it. It is not going to be an easy lateral jump.
Also, what is your motivation for the switch if you don’t have any interest in putting in the work?

OP - if being there every night is what is important to you, then this is NOT the job for you.
